Lindsay Lohan is ready to pay her debt to society... from the comfort of her own home. Yesterday, sources said that the 24-year-old actress, who was facing misdemeanor charges for allegedly stealing a necklace, would most likely get off with no jail time -- despite the fact that, in late April, Lohan was sentenced to 120 days in the slammer for violating her probation.
After pleading no-contest to the charges in an L.A. court Wednesday, it does indeed appear that Lohan will not be seeing the inside of a jail cell; instead, she will probably have to serve out just a fraction of that four-month jail sentence under house arrest.
"It appears a person like Ms. Lohan will be eligible for home detention," a spokesperson for the L.A. County Sheriff's Department tells People.
The spokesperson explained that house arrest is a common solution for nonviolent offenders without a serious history of crime, a category that would include Lohan. Home detention would bypass the problem of jail overcrowding -- the primary reason that Lohan's previous jail sentence was reduced from 90 days to 14. However, says the rep, Lohan would probably still get a reduced sentence. His guess? Just two weeks under house arrest.
Lohan, who was not present at today's hearing, seems content with the plea deal. In a statement delivered by her lawyer, Lohan says: "I am glad to be able to put this past me and move on with my life and my career. I support the judge's decision and hold myself accountable for being in this situation."
So is Judge Stephanie Sautner, who sentenced Lohan to those 120 days in jail, cool with this possibility? She stated in the last hearing that she was obligated to alleviate jail crowding and "would not oppose" house arrest. And she was realistic about the time that Lindsay was likely to serve.
"An early release has nothing to do with this court," said the judge. "I'm not about to battle the sheriff."
Judge Sautner had one condition, however: If Lohan does indeed get home detention, she is not allowed to serve her 480 hours of community service during that time.
Lohan has been ordered to show up at the Lynwood jail by June 17, at which time it will be determined whether she'll get a new ankle bracelet and begin her sentence at home. She's also had her probation extended for another three years and has been ordered to go to psychological counseling ("I don't think the root of her problem is substance abuse," explained the judge of her no-rehab call).
Meanwhile, the actress has begun serving her community service hours at the Los Angeles Downtown Women's Center... while still finding time to hang out at gallery openings and appear in John Travolta's upcoming Gotti biopic. If only the rest of our social lives could be as fun as Lindsay's probation...
