Future bright for 'young gun' car expert | Tony's Rod Shop

Like most of the people waiting for Saturday?s collector car panel discussion to begin, Brett Beckner has had a passion for cars since a young age. the difference is that his ?young age? wasn?t so long ago. Beckner is a licensed auctioneer and operates Classic Car Consultants, an Indianapolis-based company that specializes in buying, selling, value forecasting, appraisals and auction assistance for classic cars. He was on hand for last weekend?s Auburn Spring Collector Car Auction at Auburn Auction Park, checking out potential investments for clients. it was the first spring auction for Auctions America by RM, and Beckner was impressed. ?I think (Friday) was as good a spring auction as they?ve had up here,? Beckner said. the event was incredibly well organized, he said, something that had been lacking in previous years under different ownership. After attending last year?s spring auction, Beckner had his concerns. ?I thought lights were out for the spring auction,? he said. He?s changed his mind, impressed with how the event was planned. It?s hard not to be impressed with Beckner, too. at 33, Beckner is at the young end of the spectrum when it comes to professionals involved in the collector car hobby/business. According to Wayne Carini, a panel member and host of HD Theater?s ?Chasing Classic Cars,? Beckner is just what car collecting needs. ?we need young people getting invoved in this hobby,? Carini said. OK, maybe he didn?t mention Beckner by name, but Beckner seems to fit the bill all the same. Beckner has been involved in the business end of car collecting for more than a decade. ?I started selling cars in college,? Beckner said. ?it kind of got me hooked on the business.? Beckner began selling high-end classics, from exotics to muscle cars. Today, he buys and sells approximately 100 cars a year. It?s impressive when you consider that some of the classics he sells are older than he is. ?I like the building of relationships and the emotional connection people have with their cars,? Beckner said. Beckner is a forward thinker. He recognizes the reason the demographic of car collectors is always changing. Many people start having the disposable income needed to purchase their ?dream cars? when they reach their 40s. someone who is 45 today, for example, turned 16 in 1982. for those potential collectors, the cars they always wanted aren?t likely to be 1955 Chevys. for them, classics are cars they wanted when they were younger. ?it is a generational thing,? Beckner said. Beckner is trying to reach that younger demographic of collector. ?What I?m looking for is cars in the late ?70s and ?80s,? he said. so he travels across the country, finding cars for collectors and investors. for investors, he?s looking not at present values, but what cars will be worth in the years to come. ?the majority of my clients are out four or five years,? he said. Collecting cars remains a great investment, he said. From 1984 through 2007, he said, the average gold investment increased 13 percent in value. the average collector car price jumped 30 percent in that time period, with muscle cars up a whopping 67 percent in value. ?not only do they perform well, they?re outstanding,? Beckner said. with more than a decade of experience, Beckner still could be considered a young gun in the hobby, someone working against the tide of reverse age discrimination, building his credibility one sale, one buy, one investment at a time. ?Age has a big thing to do with it,? Beckner said. ?You?re always going to have that question.? but the future seems more than bright for Beckner, and for the spring auction, too.
