Market Design: From repugnant, to legal, to mandatory?

The Telegraph reports on the intersection of prostitution law (it's now legal) and unemployment law (you can lose your benefits if you turn down a job) in Germany:?'If you don't take a job as a prostitute, we can stop your benefits'

"A 25-year-old waitress who turned down a job providing "sexual services'' at a brothel in Berlin faces possible cuts to her unemployment benefit under laws introduced this year.

"Prostitution was legalised in Germany just over two years ago and brothel owners ? who must pay tax and employee health insurance ? were granted access to official databases of jobseekers.

?"The waitress, an unemployed information technology professional, had said that she was willing to work in a bar at night and had worked in a cafe.

?"She received a letter from the job centre telling her that an employer was interested in her "profile'' and that she should ring them. Only on doing so did the woman, who has not been identified for legal reasons, realise that she was calling a brothel.

?"Under Germany's welfare reforms, any woman under 55 who has been out of work for more than a year can be forced to take an available job ? including in the sex industry ? or lose her unemployment benefit. Last month German unemployment rose for the 11th consecutive month to 4.5 million, taking the number out of work to its highest since reunification in 1990.

?"The government had considered making brothels an exception on moral grounds, but decided that it would be too difficult to distinguish them from bars. As a result, job centres must treat employers looking for a prostitute in the same way as those looking for a dental nurse."
...
"Tatiana Ulyanova, who owns a brothel in central Berlin, has been searching the online database of her local job centre for recruits.

"Why shouldn't I look for employees through the job centre when I pay my taxes just like anybody else?" said Miss Ulyanova."
**************

So we have here a situation in which a formerly repugnant transaction became legal and might, under some circumstances become mandatory (at least for those seeking unemployment benefits). This reminds me of one of the better arguments against legalizing kidney sales and other payments to organ donors: once they were legal, some future Congress might want to make unemployment benefits available only to people who had already utilized their kidney resources, for example? See my posts on the fraught debate about?compensation for donors.

Taking Your Business to the Next Level With Outsourcing ...

Tips For Profitable Outsourcing

It takes a certain amount of time and work to build an internet based business. The good news is that it?s possible to recruit others to do many of the everyday tasks necessary to run and grow your business. That?s right; getting the right talent to help you save your time is what you need to scale your online business.

One way to handle this is to hire employees, but a more efficient way is to use outsourcing. What?s so appealing about outsourcing is that it enables you to save both time and money as you delegate many tasks to others. If you?re wondering how to start out with outsourcing, the following are some rules that will help you succeed. Fix Cleaner

Although many workers who take outsourcing jobs will be in countries other than your own, you can also hire people closer to home. There?s no hard and fast rule about where you should hire people from -it all depends on the circumstances. It?s best to look at the person?s qualifications rather than where he or she is from. However, it does get a little easier to manage when you know you can see the candidate face to face. So you may want to go either local or international at different times. It?s best to take your time and find the best person for the job, no matter where they end up hailing from. Singorama

Don?t forget to ask for the support once the project is completed. If the person you?re hiring is some kind of techie, it?s likely that you may need help later on. You should ideally take care of this when negotiating with the person, so everything is clear right from the start. This can be a critical issue, because in some cases not having support will render the whole task useless to you. If you?re dealing with a pro, they?ll be glad to include a certain amount of support in the arrangement; if not, find someone else. It?s always best to have everything on the table before you make an agreement. Model Trains For Beginners

Give small projects at the beginning not big ones. The reason for this is that the starting phase is the testing phase. Even though you might have used some sample tests to help you hire someone, it?s not a good idea to have that person start out with big stuff. By giving smaller more measurable tasks, you?ll know how the professional is performing. However, don?t just stick to this phase, move on once you know that your worker is delivering. It?s important that your professional not think that you are too hesitant to work with them as they might start to have doubts about you. Discovering long term success through outsourcing is all about being knowledgeable of the better characteristics of it. If you have never outsourced a project before, now is the time, as it is never too late. You just need to be sure that you are directing your attention toward the basics and that you are first setting up a strong foundation. Do your background research and homework to ensure that you are headed in the right direction. When moving ahead, you will start to see what does and what does not work for you. You should get going and put the suggestions we provided in this article to use, then you can experience the wonderful advantages of outsourcing.

Hands-on with the Acer Iconia Tab A700

Acer A700

We dropped in to visit the folks at Acer and have a look at the Iconia A700, and it's impressive. The first thing you notice is how thin and light it is (9.9mm and 600grams, respectively), and then you turn it on. The 1920 x 1200 resolution will absolutely blow you away, and the quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 inside pushes all those pixels nice and smoothly.

Acer's also made the A700 a complete media center. You have HDMI out, as well as HDMI to VGA support so you can use a projector, and the microUSB port supports USB host mode so you can connect things like your camera through the included micro to full size USB adapter. Now the switch to MHL in Ice Cream Sandwich (which the A700 ships with -- no "update soon" nonsense here) makes more sense. Add in features like Dolby Mobile 5.1 HD audio output and a microSD card slot, and this looks like one of the tablets to buy in 2012.

Playful Communication in Relationships: It's all about Humor ...

Guest Post by Alia Haley

Credit: Ambro

Laughter is the best medicine because it has a very positive effect on your well-being and health. A good laugh can be the key to relieving stress and tension. Not only that, it can also enhance your mood, enhance your creativity and brings a great rush of energy. Laughter when shared with someone is a very important part of developing a strong and healthy relationship. Making a conscious effort to bring in humor and laughter on a daily basis is perhaps the best way to forge lifelong relationships with almost anyone ? whether in the family or at work!

Communicating with people in a playful manner adds more excitement to the relationship and helps in keeping it fresh and vibrant. Laughter can be a great way to break the ice and enrich interactions. Similarly, laughter and playfulness with your partner is the essence of a solid and intimate relationship with your loved one.

Most people are drawn towards smiling and funny individuals as it creates an aura of positivity. Laughter is also contagious and it can make the least sociable people break out in laughter! Here are a few ways in which you can enjoy playful humorous communication in relationships:

1. Ensure that both partners are in on the humor

Humor can only be successful when both people are in on the joke. Try not to do or say something to people who are overly sensitive or to people who wouldn?t necessarily appreciate the good humor. Playfulness is mutual, so joke around with people who can reciprocate the fun mutually. This kind of humor is great for building goodwill and trust in a relationship. There are times, when a spouse playfully tries to annoy his/her partner.

These things are amusing when done once, but if it becomes a habit, then it does get annoying and might even damage the relationship. Playful communication is meant to be enjoyable for both the people involved, so take the time to analyze whether the other person is enjoying it or not. Carry on with the fun, if you are getting positive signals from the other person, else stop.

2. Try to use humor to downplay conflict in a relationship

If you are going through a disagreement-like situation which has led to a heated conflict, then use the powerful weapon of humor to lighten up things. Humor is a great way to restart your conversation and can also restore a sense of normality in a relationship without any feeling of awkwardness. Playfulness can be used skillfully to get intimate with your partner, or can even be used for getting your point across without hurting their sentiments. Humor should be free from ridicule and sarcasm, so try to ease the tension by sharing laughter.

3. Humor should not be used as a disguise for hiding your inner emotions

Humor or playful communication is important for seeking positivity in life and standing up strongly in adverse situations. However, humor is not healthy when it is used to disguise your painful emotions of anger, fear, hurt or disappointment. The truth can be made to sound funny, but disguising the truth in laughter is not at all humorous. This kind of behavior can create a feeling of mistrust in your relationship. Misplaced humor does more harm to you than any good.

Playfulness, laughter and humor ? when done in a healthy and appropriate manner ? are the ingredients to a lifelong relationship. A humorous person is not only viewed as being friendly and easy to get along, but can also be trusted deeply.

Texas' Acho looks to brother for NFL guidance

INDIANAPOLIS ? Texas linebacker Emmanuel Acho is supremely confident he can follow in his brother's footsteps as an impact rookie in the NFL.

Sam Acho, a defensive end for the Longhorns who converted to outside linebacker after the Arizona Cardinals drafted him in the fourth round last year, registered seven sacks in 2011.

?He had a tremendous impact,? Emmanuel said Saturday at the NFL combine. ?I think I can make the same, if not a bigger, impact because of him, because of how he's educated me about the NFL.?

Projected as a mid-round pick, Emmanuel's stock could rise solely because of his score on the Wonderlic Test, which measures intelligence. Emmanuel is a three-time first-team Academic All-Big 12 selection who graduated in December with a degree in sports management. Sam had an even more impressive academic record at Texas, winning the William V. Campbell Trophy, also known as the Academic Heisman, in 2010.

?Sam told me everything,? Emmanuel said jokingly. ?I got the answers for the test before I have to take it. He's told me everything I need to know. Yes, sir.?

Emmanuel was asked whether he has thought about the Cardinals drafting him. After all, why wouldn't Arizona want another Acho? Sam's sack total last season was the second most by a Cardinals rookie, trailing only the 121/2 recorded by end Simeon Rice in 1996.

?I haven't thought too much about it, but it would be awesome,? Emmanuel said. ?I played with him in high school, played with him in college and playing with him at the next level would be a great experience. But, at the same time, he's told me, ?Don't worry about where you get drafted. Worry that you got the right team.' I saw that first-hand with him, how that worked out.?

Emmanuel prepared for the combine by working out at a facility in Arizona run by athletic trainer Brett Fischer, who also works for the Cardinals. Naturally, Sam was there to make sure Emmanuel was comfortable.

?My brother was there for the first month,? Emmanuel said. ?He was kind of like the training wheels, so to speak. Afterward, he took off, left me by myself.?

The brothers' parents were born in Nigeria and are the founders of The Living Hope Bible Fellowship Church in Dallas. Their father is a family and marriage counselor. Their mother is a nurse.

Both brothers have served on medical missions to Nigeria with their parents.

?Those two guys work their tails off,? said NFL.com analyst Gil Brandt, the Dallas Cowboys' personnel director during the Tom Landry era. ?They are smart, good kids, and a lot of that has to do with their parents. They're from a nice family, and they are nice kids.?

Things change, though, when the brothers are on the field. Emmanuel, who likely will play inside linebacker in the NFL, is a shade over 6-foot-1, 238 pounds. Sam carries 257 on a 6-3 frame. Both know how to throw their weight around.

?They are aggressive guys,? Brandt said. ?They are not stand-back, hold-out types. They'll hit you.?

Sam proved that last year for the Cardinals. Now it's Emmanuel's turn.

?It won't be a hard transition for me to the next level,? Emmanuel said.

?And that's not only because of my intelligence, but also I got a guy who's done it 365 days prior to me, every step, whether it's an interview, whether it's the 40-yard dash, whether it's reporting to minicamp.?

World News - UN team has 'serious concerns' about Iran's nuclear ...

NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.

By msnbc.com staff and news services

Updated at 3:16 p.m. ET: VIENNA -- Iran has rapidly ramped up production of higher-grade enriched uranium over the last few months, the U.N. nuclear agency said Friday, in a confidential report that feeds concerns about how quickly the Islamic republic could produce an atomic bomb.

The report by the International Atomic Energy Agency also said Iran had failed to give a convincing explanation about a quantity of missing uranium metal. Diplomats say the amount unaccounted for is large enough to be used for experiments in arming a nuclear missile.

"The Agency continues to have serious concerns regarding possible military dimensions to Iran's nuclear program," the Vienna-based U.N. body said in a quarterly report about Iran issued to its member states.

Israel, which has threatened Iran with pre-emptive strikes on its nuclear sites, had no immediate comment on the report. Germany, which has backed tough new sanctions on Iran, said it was further cause for concern.

"Germany is very concerned about the latest report from the IAEA. We think Iran should understand the key to ending sanctions is in their own hands, they have a duty to cooperate with the international community," said German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle.

The Islamic republic's rapid expansion of work which can have both civilian and military purposes underlines that it has no intention of backing down in a long-running row with the West that has sparked fears of war in the Middle East.

Tehran says its nuclear program is exclusively for civilian purposes and denies it aims to make atomic weapons.

Iran thwarted investigation into nuclear program, UN watchdog says

The confidential IAEA report said Iran has, since late last year, tripled output of uranium refined to a level that brings it significantly closer to potential bomb material, an official familiar with the agency's probe said.

Making clear the two sides were far apart, it said there were major differences on how to tackle the issue and that Iran had dismissed the IAEA's concerns as "unfounded." No further meetings are planned.

The setback increased concerns of a downward spiral towards conflict between Iran and the West, and sent oil prices higher.

IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano urged Iran in the report to provide "early access" to Parchin, a military site near Tehran seen as central to the agency's investigations into possible military aspects of Iran's nuclear work.

The failure of the two-day IAEA visit could hamper any resumption of wider nuclear negotiations between Iran and six world powers - the United States, China, Russia, Britain, France and Germany - as the sense grows that Tehran feels it is being backed into a corner.

The IAEA report said Iran had carried out a significant expansion of activities at its main enrichment plant near the central city of Natanz, and also increased work at the Fordow underground facility.

Enriched uranium can be used to fuel nuclear power plants, which is Iran's stated aim, or provide material for bombs if refined much further, which the West suspects is Tehran's ultimate plan.

At Natanz, the IAEA report said 52 cascades - each containing around 170 centrifuges - were now operating, up from 37 in November.

At Fordow, almost 700 centrifuges are now refining uranium to a fissile concentration of 20 percent and preparations are under way to install many more, the report said.

Fordow is of particular concern for the West and Israel as Iran is shifting the most sensitive aspect of its nuclear work - refining uranium to a level that takes it significantly closer to potential bomb material - to the site.

Estimated to be buried beneath 80 meters (265 feet) of rock and soil, it gives Iran better protection against any Israeli or U.S. military strikes.

The report said Iran had now produced nearly 110 kg of uranium enriched to 20 percent since early 2010. Western experts say about 250 kg is needed for a nuclear weapon, although it would need to be enriched much further.

An IAEA report in November suggested Iran had pursued military nuclear technology helped to precipitate the latest sanctions by the European Union and United States.

Iran last month said it had started to refine uranium to a fissile concentration of 20 percent - compared with the 3.5 percent it mainly produces at Natanz and which is used for nuclear power plants - at Fordow.

Nuclear bombs require uranium enriched to 90 percent, but Western experts say much of the effort required to get there is already achieved once it reaches 20 percent concentration, shortening the time needed for any nuclear weapons "break-out."

Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

(AP) ? A sting operation by a suburban Houston police department netted one of their own when surveillance cameras caught an officer repeatedly stealing colleagues' food and drinks from the refrigerator in the station's break room.

Deer Park police Officer Kevin Yang was charged with misdemeanor theft and suspended for 30 days without pay. Deer Park Police Chief Greg Griggs tells KTRK-TV (http://bit.ly/w3B4KP) of Houston that a class C misdemeanor conviction would not keep Yang from returning to duty.

Griggs says he authorized the video sting because the thefts have been going on for too long. Even though the items being stolen may be of trivial value, Griggs says theft is theft.

Yang tells KTRK that he was merely taking it upon himself to keep the shared refrigerator clean.

Everything Everywhere promises 'small-scale LTE launch' in UK by the end of 2012

Everything Everywhere's spilled more details on its 4G hopes and dreams. That £1.5 billion investment is aiming to get a small scale LTE launch by the end of the year -- subject to Ofcom's say-so. The lucky epicenter of for the future of mobile communications in the UK? That'll be Bristol, which will begin its trial on 1800MHz spectrum from April. It's already tested out the 800MHz in Cornwall, which is apparently better suited to rural coverage. But before we hit those dizzying fourth generation speeds, customers on the not-so-unholy union of T-Mobile and Orange will also benefit from more HSPA+ upgrades across the network. Coverage across the network-sharing carriers currently stands at around 60 percent, but Everything Everywhere aims to reach full coverage before the close of 2012. How's that London trial going, O2?

What's for Lunch? Obik?, Canary Wharf | Londonist

Italian mozzarella champion Obik? launched its premiere London restaurant in Canary Wharf back in November. Purportedly Italy?s favourite restaurant group, Obik??s focus is to offer premium Mozzarella di Bufala Campana DOP served alongside a typical assortment of Italian artisan products, such as Prosciutto Crudo di Parma DOP, Bresaola della Valtellina (cured beef) and Isle of Ewe smoked salmon along with a mouthwatering list of antipasti, hot dishes, freshly baked pizza and aperitifs.

If you love proper mozzarella and down to earth southern Italian cooking then you?re very much in luck (especially if you live or work round Canary Wharf). And if you?re wondering how such a cheesy concept can result in a franchise spanning six countries in three continents, you should head over to the Wharf and see what the hubbub?s all about.

The open and airy Obik? benefits from its location within the large-windowed winter garden interior. But, honestly, the place could be a real dump and still be worth a visit. The mozzarella (whether delicate classica, naturally smoked affumicata or creamy burrata) is indeed a delicious draw. The ?12.50 lunch menu (choose from three main courses plus a ?mini dessert?, mineral water or soft drink and a coffee) presents an efficient and reasonably priced way to savour the simple beauty of one of Italy?s most delicious exports.

Obik? is located at Unit 1 West Wintergarden, 35 Bank Street, E14 5NW (but don?t be surprised if more outlets start springing up all over town).

Cloud Music Sniper brings your Google Music library to any music player

Android Central

There is absolutely no doubt that Google Music is a fantastic service to have, if slightly limiting at times. The music stored in your cloud locker is only ever available to the official Google Music app which is frustrating for some. Oh for a world where Poweramp or Winamp could access all that music. Well that world is now, and Cloud Music Sniper can bring your music to your chosen music app.

The previous incarnation was known as Google Music Sniper, but was suspended due to its name. The new version requires no root, and works by 'sniping' your offline synced music content and storing it in a new directory. This directory is then available to your alternative music player. The music is actually available to be taken off your device and used on your desktop computer. To the user it is as simple as firing up the app and following some on screen instructions.

Cloud Music Sniper is still in the early stages, and the developers are known for constantly updating their apps, so there should be plenty more to come. If this sounds like something for you, it'll run you for $1.99/£1.26 in the Android Market. Download links can be found after the break.

YouTube enlists big-name help to redefine channels

(AP) ? YouTube is enlisting Hollywood's help to reach a generation of viewers more familiar with smartphones than TV remotes.

The online video giant is aiming to create 25 hours of programming per day with the help of some of the top names in traditional TV. The Google-owned site is spreading its wealth among producers, directors, and other filmmakers, using a $100 million pot of seed money it committed last fall. The fund represents YouTube's largest spending on original content so far.

YouTube believes it is laying groundwork for the future. While the number of traditional TV watchers has leveled off in recent years, more and more people are watching video on mobile phones, tablets and computers, especially the 18- to 34-year-old age demographic that advertisers covet.

The idea is to create 96 additional YouTube channels, which are essentially artists' home pages, where viewers can see existing video clips and click "subscribe" to be notified when new content goes up.

Well-funded videos by a select roster of stars are likely to be more watchable than the average YouTube fare of cute cats and webcam monologues. YouTube is betting that a solid stream of good content will attract more revenue from advertisers, bring viewers back frequently and bolster its parent company's fledgling Web-connected-TV platform, Google TV.

The cash has enticed some of TV's biggest stars, including "Fast Five" director Justin Lin, who directs episodes of "Community," ''CSI" creator Anthony Zuiker and Nancy Tellem, the former president of CBS entertainment.

Zuiker is teaming up on a horror series for YouTube after observing his own family's behavior. His three pre-teen sons spend more time on phones, iPads and computers than watching TV these days.

"We want to jointly take the risk with YouTube and roll the dice on the future," Zuiker says. "The old regime is going to falter because everybody thinks the TV is the only device that really counts, and that's just not the case."

For producers, it's a chance to create shows that are completely free of meddling from major studios. They can also stay relevant with a younger crowd whose viewing is moving increasingly online.

Several new channels such as the extreme sports-focused Network A and Spanish-language Tutele have launched already. YouTube hopes to have them all up and running by this summer.

"This was really about galvanizing the ecosystem at large," says Alex Carloss, global head of original programming for YouTube. "We see the portfolio (of funded channels) really representing the best of TV meeting the best of the Web."

YouTube isn't the only Web video service that has started to pay for original content. Netflix Inc. recently launched the original series "Lilyhammer," while Hulu premiered "Battleground." But YouTube videos tend to be under 10 minutes, instead of fitting into traditional half-hour or hour-long TV slots. And aside from a few guidelines, ultimate control is given over to the artist, including what is uploaded and when new episodes appear.

YouTubers also get away with far edgier stuff than the middle finger that rapper M.I.A. flashed during the Super Bowl halftime show.

Although YouTube's entire investment is less than half of what some studios spend on one blockbuster movie, about a third of the new channels were awarded to scrappy YouTube veterans who already know how to make it big online while keeping production costs low.

YouTube expects to recoup what it spends on the grants by sharing ad revenue the new videos generate.

At Maker Studios, which received money for three new channels, the funds have turbo-charged an already teeming operation that has about 160 full-time staff spread across several buildings crammed with props and computers in the west Los Angeles suburb of Culver City.

On a recent visit, two scenes were being shot in an alley. One was for a parody of a Christmas movie trailer. The other was for a new series about a crime-fighting van called "Si, Es I, Pepe."

Maker cranks out about 300 YouTube videos each month at a bare-bones cost of about $1,000 each.

The studio's videos generate a whopping 500 million views each month, thanks largely to established hits that include Ray William Johnson's roundup of crazy videos and such viral giants as "Epic Rap Battles of History."

Advertisers pay up to $10 per thousand views for video ads that precede the featured content, according to TubeMogul, a major buyer of YouTube ads for the nation's biggest advertisers including Proctor & Gamble Co. and News Corp.'s 20th Century Fox movie studio.

Established YouTube partners share roughly half of their revenue with the site. So if Maker videos generate $1 or $2 in ad revenue per thousand views, it would just be scraping by.

Maker co-founder Danny Zappin, who quit film school to buy a high-end camera to start a career on YouTube, says it's a "tricky balance" to keep the studio's share of ad revenue higher than the cost of video-making. The undisclosed amount it got from YouTube, on top of the $1.5 million venture capital it received about a year ago, lets Maker put up more videos without waiting for the views and cash to roll in.

"It gives us resources and runway that we wouldn't otherwise have," Zappin said.

For other less-established players in online video, the money has given them an added reason to get involved.

Former CBS executive Tellem teamed up with TV entrepreneur Brian Bedol to create Bedrocket Media Ventures, an upstart production company behind several new YouTube channels, including Network A. The funding "allowed us, or caused us, to focus on YouTube ahead of other platforms," Bedol says.

Analysts believe YouTube has made a wise investment at a time ad rates for online video are rising.

YouTube can be successful with just a few big hits ? think of Rebecca Black's "Friday" ? even if thousands of videos fall flat. It's similar to the hit-or-miss approach to traditional TV and movies.

"The investor community does not look at this as money wasted," Macquarie analyst Ben Schachter says.

Since promising to share ad revenue with its most popular uploaders in 2007, YouTube has invested in original content mainly by paying for equipment and training new artists, but it was never as big as this.

Backing up its new strategy, YouTube also revamped its homepage to prioritize channels and recommendations above just the most-viewed videos. The revamp allows advertisers to target popular channels or categories of content more easily.

YouTube's funding plan takes a page from Apple Inc.'s playbook. When the iPhone maker launched its App Store in 2008, a $100 million seed fund created by Silicon Valley investor John Doerr spawned hundreds of thousands of new apps.

"Our developers are not software engineers," YouTube's vice president of global content partnerships, Robert Kyncl, told a convention in January. "Our developers are Hollywood stars, are online stars, are regular folks like you and I."

If nothing else, the injection of funds will spawn content never before been seen on any screen, large or small.

"Fast Five" director Lin, who is teaming up with YouTube stars Ryan Higa and Kevin "KevJumba" Wu on the "YOMYOMF" channel, said his focus is not to try to find audiences with stereotypical Asian-American content. Rather, the idea is to give a platform to people who have unique voices but haven't been heard yet.

He says Higa and Wu didn't follow any set rules when they jumped to popularity with a mix of oddball humor, brutal honesty and rap.

"They just did what they loved, and people came," Lin said. "If we're going to fail, I would rather go out with that philosophy."

Investing in Agriculture

The world has a rapidly growing problem on its hands: an exponentially increasing human population.

In 1960, the world population was three billion. Last year, it reached seven billion, and in 2040, the United Nations expects it to be around nine billion.

The organization noted in a recent report that the globe is running out of time to ensure that there?s enough water, energy and food for the rising population, as each year we?ll have more mouths to feed.

And the U.N. warns that if the world is unsuccessful in tackling these problems, it could send three billion people into poverty.

The Seeds for a Commodity Supercycle

According to U.N. estimates, by 2030 the globe will need at least 50% more food. And in a rapidly changing environment, new limits to supply will be created, and demand for food will rise exponentially, creating what experts call a commodity supercycle.

The current commodity supercycle, which is pushing food prices even higher, started back in 2000.

Commodity experts, like Jim Rogers, have expressed a belief that the current commodity supercycle will last for 20 to 25 years.

Chris Watling of Longview Economics agrees. Watling is the one who identified that commodity bull rallies last 20 to 25 years, tracing secular bull markets back to 1750.

And if Rodgers and Watling are correct, then the commodity bull market that started in 2000 will run all the way until 2020 to 2025.

Simple Equation: More Food = More Fertilizer

Rodgers himself has noted that there is currently a powerful underlying demand for food.

In 2007, food prices surged, sending millions into starvation and causing riots in Cameroon, Egypt, Bangladesh and Haiti. And while food prices dropped in 2008, cooling the riots, they?ve been rising since 2009.

And Rodgers sees ?more turmoil? in the future.

As the world population has more than doubled in the past 50 years and continues to grow, food shortages are set to rise while the quantity of arable farmland is decreasing.

But the growing global food crisis isn?t all doom and gloom? it offers an opportunity for innovators in the agricultural industry, especially for those who produce fertilizers.

It?s simple; growing demand for food will bring an increased demand for fertilizers.

Just take a look at some key information provided by The International Fertilizer Association below:

  • Every year the world uses 170 million tons of fertilizer for food, fiber, fuel and feed.
  • ?Global food security? and ?sustainable agriculture? will continue to become popular phrases in our vocabulary.
  • Nitrogen fertilizers are used to produce 48% of the world?s food.
  • Without the use of fertilizer, two billion more people will likely become vulnerable to hunger.

Indicators point to an extreme need for increases in crop and fertilizer production, which is good news for companies like CF Industries Holdings (NYSE: CF) and Scotts Miracle-Gro Company (NYSE: SMG).

While both produce fertilizer for the agriculture industry, out of these two players I like CF Industries the best. The company currently has an attractive P/E of 9.67, much lower than the industry average of 14 and half the size Scotts Miracles-Gro?s P/E, currently sitting at 19.74.

There?s also the big guys like Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan (NYSE: POT) and The Mosaic Company (NYSE: MOS). Even the miners, such as Vale S.A. (NYSE: VALE), which mine the potash used as fertilizer.

But at Investment U, we like to uncover new ideas so that our readers are the first to know. And there?s one new startup that?s trying to revolutionize the way farmers fertilize their crops?

But before we take a look at that small company, I?ll need to cover some details on the specific fertilizer they produce called ?urea.?

Quick Guide to Urea

First discovered by French chemist Hilare Marin Rouelle in 1773, urea became the first organic compound to be synthetically formulated in 1828 by a pioneer of organic chemistry, German chemist Friedrich Wohler.

I won?t bore you with the science behind how urea makes soil more fertile for crops (where soil bacteria can posses the enzyme ?unrease,? which converts urea into ammonia form in soil, etc.), but I will highlight some interesting data that makes it such an attractive product for agricultural producers.

Urea is an exceptional fertilizer; it?s extremely soluble in water, non-toxic, easy to manufacture and can be used on all types of crops.

And while urea is an important raw material for the chemical industry and is also used in the medical field, explosives and some automotive systems, more than 90% of urea world production is for use as a nitrogen-release fertilizer.

Urea has the highest nitrogen content of all commonly used solid nitrogenous fertilizers, 46%. And it makes up 57.4% of worldwide nitrogen fertilizer consumption, according to the IFA.

Compared to other nitrogen fertilizers, urea is safer to transport, less corrosive to equipment and has the lowest transport cost per unit of nitrogen nutrient.

And as the major fertilizer traded internationally, urea has captured more than 56% of world trade in the dry fertilizer category to date.

Urea Price Per Metric Ton

Prices for urea have gradually increased over time, and are up over 360% since the beginning of 2000, costing around $368.38 per metric ton today. And prices will continue to rise as demand increases.

A New Business Model

And the small startup that could profit from increasing demand for urea fertilizers is BioNitrogen Corp. (OTC: BION.PK).

Based in Doral, Florida, BioNitrogen is a company that can produce urea fertilizer using a method that?s environmentally responsible and helpful to local economies.

More than 90% of the world?s urea production uses natural gas as the hydrocarbon feedstock. As we know, using natural gas creates carbon dioxide as a byproduct, which has a negative effect on the environment.

This is where BioNitrogen has separated itself from the competition.

The company has created an innovative business model using an inexpensive, small-scale technology that gasifies biomass and transforms the resulting natural gas into urea.

Put more simply, BioNitrogen has created a process that takes municipal and agricultural waste (rice and peanut hulls, corn stalks and leaves, sugar cane remains, etc., which have little or no value), and burns it in a contained system to create synthetic natural gas and produce urea.

Agricultural waste is renewable and doesn?t require the need to pull fossil fuels from the earth. And the company?s manufacturing method recycles harmful chemicals separated during the urea creation process, creating a production scheme that has virtually no impact on the environment.

It isn?t just a fresh advanced technology that puts BioNitrogen in a new generation of fertilizer producers, it?s their local based business model that makes it possible.

They build small, cost-effective plants where the raw materials exist (farmers biomass), take it, transport it at a low cost, convert it into urea and sell it right back to the farmers.

The plants are greenhouse gas free, use 100% recycled water and send excess electricity they generate right back to the gird.

Providing a small scale, localized production model has its advantages, including lower costs for material handling, transportation and land acquisition.

Future Growth

Management understands the demand that population growth will bring to fertilizers and believes that the market for urea is strong.

Michael McCarthy, the company?s Chief Financial Officer, recently stated in an address to the Advisory Board of BioNitrogen:

?The world?s population will always need more food no matter the economic conditions of most of the global economies or countries. In our view, BioNitrogen?s proprietary production facilities will quickly become the gold standard for exceeding environmental compliance. From a company valuation and investment perspective, BioNitrogen?s strategic market positioning is very strong indeed.?

And while I agree that BioNitrogen has a great business model that could see substantial growth in the future, investors should use caution, as this is a story we hope will turn into a profitable endeavor for shareholders.

The stock started trading publicly at the end of January and has not filed a quarterly report yet, so we cannot verify the health of the company?s finances. Also, with such a cheap stock with low volume, the price swings can be incredibly volatile.

That being said, BioNitrogen is certainly something investors should keep their eye on. As we continue to see the world population grow and the demand for food and fertilizers grow with it, companies like BioNitrogen will have the opportunity to thrive.
