Jordan says has hosted 100 Syrian deserters (AP)

AMMAN, Jordan ? Jordan's foreign minister says 100 Syrian military and police deserters have taken refuge in the kingdom throughout the eight-month uprising in their country.

Nasser Judeh's Sunday remarks were the first official public confirmation that Jordan hosts Syrian defectors.

In September, officials said privately that Jordan had received 60 Syrian army and police deserters, who ranged in rank from corporal to colonel.

Judeh told The Associated Press that the Syrian soldiers and policemen, whom he claimed were conscripts rather than officers, had arrived in batches over the last eight months.

Many Syrians fleeing President Bashar Assad's crackdown have also sought refuge in neighboring Turkey.

Police ban Congo election rallies, at least 2 dead (Reuters)

KINSHASA (Reuters) ? Police in Congo blocked President Joseph Kabila's main rival at an airport in Kinshasa on Saturday to stop him staging an election rally after at least two died in violence across the central African state's capital city.

Two days before presidential and parliamentary elections, rival factions hurled rocks at each other and gunfire was heard across town.

A Reuters reporter saw one lifeless body on the road to the airport while a U.N. source reported another death elsewhere in town.

The violence was the latest sign of tension in the run-up to Congo's second election since a 1998-2003 war, a poll which has been marked by opposition allegations of irregularities and concerns about inadequate preparations.

Police stopped opposition leader Etienne Tshisekedi and his entourage from leaving Kinshasa's N'djili airport after his party said it would defy a ban on political rallies imposed earlier on Saturday.

"I'll call the population of Kinshasa to come here," Tshisekedi, 78, sitting in a red Hummer surrounded by police at the exit gate of the airport, told reporters.

"We are already dying in our thousands, we are not going to let a few injuries stop us fighting now," he said, a reference to his accusations that Kabila's government has saddled Congo's population with insecurity and poverty.

After hours of failed negotiations by the United Nations peacekeeping mission, police moved in on Tshisekedi's entourage, dragging several people from their cars, according to a Reuters witness. Tshisekedi was later escorted to his home by the police, according to a U.N. source.

Earlier, tens of thousands of Congolese turned out on the airport road, most of them identifiable as Tshisekedi supporters. Some chanted his name while many billboards for Kabila and his allies had been torn down.

Kabila, Tshisekedi and the other main challenger, Vital Kamerhe, had been due to hold rallies within several hundred metres of each other in central Kinshasa on Saturday.

Kamerhe told Reuters that four people had been killed, including one of his supporters, but it was not immediately possible to confirm that toll.

POLL DELAY?

Under constitutional amendments signed off by Kabila this year, the presidential vote will be decided in a single round, meaning the winner can claim victory with a simple majority. Analysts say that favours Kabila against the split opposition.

Despite a logistics operation supported by helicopters from South Africa and Angola, some observers doubt whether all the ballot slips will reach the 60,000 voting stations by Monday in a country two-thirds the size of the European Union.

However national election commission president Daniel Ngoy Mulunda said he did not expect any delay to the polls, saying that materials were 90 percent deployed in the provinces.

"No, I am not expecting any change. We have today, the whole night, tomorrow day and night to finalize (preparations)," Mulunda told a news conference in Kinshasa.

"We had some delays with weather but we know it will work - on Monday it won't rain."

Earlier, Tshisekedi said he could accept a delay but only if Mulunda, whom he accused of having political ties to Kabila and turning a blind eye to alleged irregularities, was sacked.

"I would agree (to a delay) if that meant a more credible, democratic and transparent process," he told French RFI radio.

"But one thing is clear: if we say there will be a delay, it is clear that the election commission cannot be led by Daniel Ngoy Mulunda," he said, accusing him of having been a founding member of Kabila's PPRD political party.

Mulunda, who will have the deciding vote if his commission is split on any election dispute, said this week he did not deny having been a member of the delegation that accompanies Kabila on foreign trips, but said he was not a founding PPRD member.

Kabila's rivals say fake polling stations have been set up to allow vote-rigging, an allegation denied by the authorities. They also accuse Kabila of using state media and transport assets for his campaign.

Kamerhe said the Congolese would not accept a rigged poll.

"They want free and fair elections that allow them to take their destiny in their own hands. People will refuse cheating wherever it takes place," he told Reuters, surrounded by chanting and dancing supporters at his party headquarters.

For many Congolese, there was a last-minute scramble to find out where they should be voting. Gervis Ilunga, a 44-year-old security guard, said he registered in one Kinshasa district but ultimately found his name elsewhere.

"In 2006, things were at least organised," he said of the first post-war poll largely organised under the auspices of the United Nations. "It is not like that this time ... There will be too many challenges this time."

Arrest in Chicago hospital parking garage shooting (AP)

CHICAGO ? A housekeeping employee suspected in the fatal shooting of a woman inside a Chicago hospital parking garage, which prompted an hours-long lockdown, was arrested during a Friday traffic stop, police said.

Angela Bonds, 48, of Riverside was shot late Thursday in a University of Illinois at Chicago hospital garage and later died, authorities said.

University police characterized the killing as an "apparent domestic-related shooting" in a campus alert posted early Friday on the school's website and said officers were seeking a man who was a housekeeper at the hospital.

Officers pulled the 47-year-old suspect over for a routine traffic stop at 6:30 a.m. Friday, and the officer recognized the man from a description in the alert, university police spokesman Mark Rosati said. The suspect fled the car and was arrested a few blocks away, he said.

A weapon was recovered but officers didn't immediately know if it was used in the shooting.

Rosati said the suspect had worked at the hospital for 15 years, but he declined to discuss his relationship to Bonds.

The hospital was locked down for hours while police searched for the gunman but resumed normal operations around 5 a.m. Friday. Rosati said authorities don't believe the gunman was ever inside the hospital after the shooting.

The garage is near the hospital but not attached to it, Rosati said. He wasn't sure whether the hospital has metal detectors but said the university has security cameras posted indoors and outdoors across its 250-acre campus.

The International Cooperation to Sequence the Atlantic Salmon Genome (ICSASG, the "Cooperation") has awarded the Phase II contract for next-generation sequencing and analysis of the Atlantic salmon genome to the J. Craig Venter Institute (JCVI) in Rockville, Maryland. The JCVI will be sequencing the salmon genome using next-generation technologies, including assembly to integrate Sanger and next-generation sequence, and comparative genomics. This effort is expected to generate a high-quality resource for those responsible for the management of wild salmon stocks and the salmon aquaculture industry, as well as providing a reference genome for work with other salmonids.

The Cooperation was formed in 2009 as a partnership between the Research Council of Norway, the Norwegian Fishery and Aquaculture Industry Research Fund, Genome British Columbia, and the Chilean Economic Development Agency (CORFO) and its Innovation Agency InnovaChile. The group brings together expert biologists who have studied salmonids with commercial and government agencies interested in funding further study. Salmonids play a key commercial and environmental role; while some salmon genetic information is known, many fundamental questions remain.

"A fully annotated salmon genome will provide important information about the impact of cultured fish escapees on wild populations, about preservation of populations that are at risk, about strategies for fighting pathogens, and about environmental sustainability issues," says ICSASG chair Dr. Steinar Bergseth at the Research Council of Norway. "A fully assembled reference sequence available for researchers worldwide will have a major impact on research into salmon and other salmonids, such as rainbow trout."

"This is a good example showing that science allows nations and institutions to cooperate on a field where they usually are competitors" says CEO Gonzalo J. Herrera of CONICYT.

"The salmon genome is large and contains repetitive sequences which make it a more difficult genome sequence to assemble. Working with ICSASG, we will complement the Phase I data with next-generation sequence data to provide the most complete salmon genome possible," says Dr. Jason Miller PhD, an associate professor at JCVI.

Worldwide, commercial salmon production exceeds one billion pounds annually, with about 70% coming from aquaculture salmon farms. In addition to being an important economic resource, salmon and other salmonidae species such as trout are considered "sentinel species" for monitoring water quality, and are important markers for ecotoxicology studies.

"This project is a novel approach to addressing issues that are of economic and social importance to aquaculture, conservation, and the environment," says Dr. Alan Winter, President & CEO of Genome BC.

Libyan tribes protest at new government line-up (Reuters)

TRIPOLI, Nov 23 (Reuters) ? Some of Libya's clans said on Wednesday they would not recognize the government, after the unveiling of a new cabinet revived regional rivalries which threaten the country's stability.

Prime minister designate Abdurrahim El-Keib named a cabinet line-up which aimed to placate Libya's patchwork of tribes, regional interests and ideological camps which are competing to fill the vacuum left by Muammar Gaddafi's fall from power.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) chief prosecutor, Luis Moreno-Ocampo, said during a visit to Tripoli that the trial of Gaddafi's captured son, Saif al-Islam, could take place inside Libya as long as certain conditions were met.

He also told Reuters that he believed Gaddafi's former intelligence chief Abdullah al-Senussi, like Saif al-Islam wanted for prosecution by the ICC, had not been captured. Libyan officials had earlier said he had been arrested.

There was no immediate sign of dissent over the cabinet from the most powerful interests - in particular the Islamists who were given none of the biggest government posts - but smaller groups complained they had been neglected.

Announcing the government was the latest step in Libya's halting progress toward building new institutions, three months after the bloodiest of the "Arab Spring" uprisings ended Gaddafi's 42-year rule.

About 150 people protested on Wednesday morning outside a hotel in the eastern city of Benghazi where the National Transitional Council has offices, a witness told Reuters.

The protesters held up banners saying: "No to a government of outsiders!," the witness said. The demonstration was led by members of the Benghazi-based Awagi and Maghariba tribes, who were angry their representatives were not in key posts.

A group calling itself the Libyan Amazigh Congress called for a suspension of all relations with the NTC over the formation of the government.

The Amazigh, or Berber, are an ethnic minority which suffered persecution under Gaddafi and which is pressing for greater recognition for its language and culture in the new Libya.

"The temporary freezing will be effective until the NTC reconciles with the demands of Amazigh Libyans," the group said in a statement.

LIBYAN TRIAL

The ICC earlier this year issued a warrant for Saif al-Islam's arrest on charges of crimes against humanity. After talks with Libyan officials, Moreno-Ocampo said the ICC would not insist on his transfer to The Hague for trial.

"My standard, the standard of the ICC, is that it has to be a judicial process that is not organised to shield the suspect. That's it," Moreno-Ocampo told reporters.

"The point is that for Libya, and I respect that, it is very important to do the cases in Libya. This is a right and I have nothing to say. I'm not competing for the case."

Western countries, which backed the revolt against Gaddafi and have a big stake in seeing his replacements succeed, welcomed the new government, saying it would guide the oil exporting country toward democracy.

The NTC's choices to fill ministerial posts appeared to have put regional affiliation ahead of experience or a track record.

Foreign diplomats had expected the foreign minister's job to go to Libya's deputy envoy to the United Nations, Ibrahim Dabbashi. Instead, it was given to Ashour Bin Hayal, a little-known diplomat from the eastern city of Derna, a long-standing anti-Gaddafi stronghold.

Ali Tarhouni, a U.S.-based academic who returned from exile to manage the oil and finance portfolios in the rebellion against Gaddafi, had no role in the new government. He was seen as a reliable partner by Western diplomats.

Hassan Ziglam, an oil industry executive, was named finance minister, and Abdulrahman Ben Yezza, a former executive with Italian oil major ENI, was made oil minister.

The cabinet line-up appeared to be a setback for the Islamists who in the past few months have emerged as a powerful force and had been eyeing the post of defense minister.

That job went instead to Osama Al-Juwali, the commander of the military council in the western Libyan town of Zintan. He staked a late claim to the post after forces under his command captured Saif al-Islam at the weekend.

Ahmed Abu Ghalisha, Juwali's deputy on the Zintan military council, said the new defense minister would focus on trying to secure the weapons flooding Libya after the conflict to oust Gaddafi.

The proliferation of weapons had prompted concerns about violence between rival groups inside Libya, and also that guns and anti-aircraft missiles could fall into the hands of al Qaeda's north African branch.

"The biggest issue right now is the spread of weapons. In the desert, weapons can travel with ease," Ghalisha told Reuters.

Carbon cycling was much smaller during last ice age than in today's climate

Monday, November 21, 2011

Atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) is one of the most important greenhouse gases and the increase of its abundance in the atmosphere by fossil fuel burning is the main cause of future global warming. In past times, during the transition between an ice age and a warm period, atmospheric CO2 concentrations changed by some 100 parts per million (ppm) ? from an ice age value of 180 ppm to about 280 ppm during warm periods.

Scientists can reconstruct these changes in the atmospheric carbon stock using direct measurements of atmospheric CO2 trapped in air bubbles in the depth of Antarctica's ice sheets. However explaining the cause of these 100ppm changes in atmospheric CO2 concentrations between glacial and interglacial climate states ? as well as estimating the carbon stored on land and in the ocean ? is far more difficult.

The researchers, led by Dr Philippe Ciais of the Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat et l'Environnement near Paris, ingeniously combined measurements of isotopes of atmospheric oxygen (18O) and carbon (13C) in marine sediments and ice cores with results from dynamic global vegetation models, the latter being driven by estimates of glacial climate using climate models.

Dr Marko Scholze of the University of Bristol's School of Earth Sciences, co-author on the paper said: "The difference between glacial and pre-industrial carbon stored in the terrestrial biosphere is only about 330 petagrams of carbon, which is much smaller than previously thought. The uptake of carbon by vegetation and soil, that is the terrestrial productivity during the ice age, was only about 40 petagrams of carbon per year and thus much smaller: roughly one third of present-day terrestrial productivity and roughly half of pre-industrial productivity."

From these results, the authors conclude that the cycling of carbon in the terrestrial biosphere ? that is, the time between uptake by photosynthesis and release by decomposition of dead plant material ? must have been much smaller than in the current, warmer climate.

Furthermore there must have been a much larger size of non-decomposable carbon on land during the Last Glacial Maximum (the period in the Earth's history when ice sheets were at their maximum extension, between 26,500 and 19,000 years ago).

The authors suggest that this inert carbon should have been buried in the permanently frozen soils and large amounts of peat of the northern tundra regions.

Jessica Simpson: Pregnancy in Crisis?

After confirming she is pregnant just before Halloween, Jessica Simpson has been on cloud nine. After years of romantic woes, a lifelong dream is coming true.

But is it all on the verge of crashing down?

As Jessica grows bigger with every day, so do emotional and medical crises that are ruining what should be an ecstatic time, according to a report in OK!

We know, we know. They claim the strife over her now-delayed wedding to Eric Johnson, and medical problems, are threatening her health and her child.

Baby Crisis

Not every day to you see a tabloid make up a miscarriage threat.

"She's said it's been a difficult pregnancy, she's been dizzy and nauseous," a pal says.

Adds another insider: "She was unprepared for how hard it would be on her body."

We're sure she's fine, physically. As far as her supposed betrayal by Eric Johnson, that's another story. Their relationship was fast track, and their pregnancy likely unplanned.

Their wedding date had to be scuttled, and now there's reportedly tension over a prenup. Are they still happy? Will they tie the knot next year? We hope so, but time will tell.

South Africa's Tutu blasts secrets bill (AP)

JOHANNESBURG ? Anti-apartheid veteran Desmond Tutu made a last-minute appeal to lawmakers to reject a bill they are to vote on Tuesday, which he calls an "insulting" attempt to roll back democracy in South Africa.

The African National Congress, which holds a majority of parliament's seats, sponsored the bill defining state secrets and making it illegal to divulge them. Parliament is expected to pass the bill.

Critics donned black and staged protests at the ANC's downtown Johannesburg headquarters during morning rush hour Tuesday, saying the bill is open to abuse because officials can broadly interpret its "national interest" justification for keeping information secret.

Activists fear the adoption of the bill in a country known for one of the continent's freest and most open constitutions could influence other governments in the region. They are preparing to challenge the measure if it becomes law before the Constitutional Court, the country's highest court.

In a statement late Monday, Tutu said it is "insulting to all South Africans to be asked to stomach legislation that could be used to outlaw whistle-blowing and investigative journalism ... and that makes the state answerable only to the state."

Tutu won a Nobel Peace Prize for his nonviolent opposition to white rule. In more recent years, he has been a sharp critic of ANC moves he sees as undermining rule of law and weakening South Africa's fledgling democracy.

The ANC said South Africa needs to update apartheid-era secrets legislation. The party bristles at suggestions from critics that its proposal would take the country back to the days when white racist officials banned newspapers and punished whistle blowers to stifle criticism.

Prominent ANC members also have opposed the bill, among them a former state security minister. The office of Nelson Mandela, South Africa's first post-apartheid president, also has expressed reservations about the bill. Newspaper editors, prominent writers led by Nobel laureate Nadine Gordimer, church groups, freedom of expression lobbyists, business leaders and others have lobbied against it.

The ANC bill says "information that is accessible to all is the basis of a transparent, open and democratic society," but says secrecy is sometimes necessary to "save lives, to enhance and to protect the freedom and security of persons, to bring criminals to justice, to protect the national security and to engage in effective government and diplomacy."

While the bill makes it a crime to divulge state secrets, it also makes it a crime for an official to withhold information to conceal wrongdoing or incompetence, or merely to avoid embarrassment.

In June, the ANC backed down on some of its original proposals, removing mandatory prison sentences for possessing and publishing secrets ? though reporters and others could still be jailed for publishing information that officials want kept secret. The ANC also agreed to limit the power to classify secrets to state security agencies, and proposed that an independent official review appeals of state security rulings on classified information.

While those amendments were welcomed, critics want more concessions, including a provision allowing those who break the law to avoid going to jail if they could argue they acted in the public interest.

At times, the rhetoric on both sides of the debate appears to have less to do with the merits of the bill than a distrust of government on one side, and distrust of the media on the other.

In a speech to parliament last week, State Security Minister Siyabonga Cwele even raised the possibility that demonstrators who have held peaceful marches to rally opposition to the bill were somehow being used by South Africa's enemies.

The secrets bill is separate from another ANC proposal that has raised concerns ? the possible creation of a tribunal that could discipline journalists, with powers to punish that have not yet been spelled out.

Relations between the ANC and the media long have been tense. Last week one of the country's most prominent newspapers, the Mail & Guardian, said it had been unable to publish details about corruption allegations against Mac Maharaj, a longtime ANC leader who recently took on the job of presidential spokesman, because of threats of criminal prosecution. Maharaj later announced he was asking police to investigate whether the paper and its journalists had broken the law in their reporting.

Diageo expects growth to remain constant despite economy (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Diageo PLC (DGE.L), the world's largest spirits company, expects sales growth in North America to remain constant despite the challenging economy, fueled by new products and a robust holiday selling season.

The British maker of Smirnoff vodka and Captain Morgan rum said it expects sales growth in this key market to continue at its recent pace, which was 5 percent in the latest quarter and 3 percent in fiscal 2011, which ended in June.

"That range is what we see as pretty sustainable," Diageo North America President Ivan Menezes told reporters ahead of an analyst and investor day in New York on Thursday.

In August, Diageo set new targets to grow overall underlying annual sales by 6 percent, improve margins, and see double-digit percentage earnings growth in the medium term.

"If we have a reasonable state of affairs in the economy ... those goals -- whilst not being a walk in the park -- are very, very doable," Paul Walsh. the company's CEO, said.

"We are definitely operating in a multispeed world but business is going forward," he said.

"In Europe there are some high spots and low spots," Walsh said, citing Germany and Russia as high spots. "We think we will probably hold our business approximately flat there in the near term."

That would be an improvement from the 3 percent decline seen last year, Walsh said.

ORGANIC GROWTH AND ACQUISITIONS

International sales have been fueled by faster-growing markets in Latin America, Africa and the Middle East.

The London-based group expects half of its turnover to come from emerging markets by 2015, up from around 35 percent currently. But Walsh said more emerging market acquisitions could lead the company to exceed the goal.

Diageo is seen by many on Wall Street as a likely suitor for the newly independent Beam Inc (BEAM.N), which makes Jim Beam and Maker's Mark bourbons.

When asked about the possibility, Walsh declined to comment. However, he did remark on the distribution contract Diageo has with the owners of Jose Cuervo tequila, which expires in June 2013.

"I would much prefer to have more of an equity participation than being a pure distributor ... but that's not in my control," Walsh said.

He said he expects to have continuous discussions with the Beckmann family owners about future options, including making the terms of the agreement more attractive.

"I think it's fair to say that the terms and conditions of the current agreement will need some revision from our perspective," Walsh said. "I don't think we make enough money out of the brand."

Diego also owns 34 percent of the Moet Hennessy drinks group and Walsh said he does not foresee any moves there.

"This is something that will not change, really, unless the owner of the 66 percent wants it to change," Walsh said, referring to French luxury goods group LVMH (LVMH.PA).

HOPING FOR A HAPPY HOLIDAY

North America represents one-third of Diageo's overall sales and 40 percent of its profits. Diageo USA is looking at a critical season as year-end holidays typically lift sales.

Larry Schwartz, president of Diageo USA, said in an interview that this year's holiday season should be better than last year, as consumers get used to the current environment.

Schwartz said new products such as peach-flavored Ciroc vodka will drive growth. Diageo also launched "whipped cream" and "fluffed marshmallow" flavored Smirnoff vodkas, on top of other new products like Johnnie Walker Double Black Scotch whisky and Guinness Black Lager.

"There's no reason for me to believe that the holiday won't be on track with what we're projecting," Schwartz said. "And we're projecting right now that it will be a good holiday, a decent holiday."

The buzz around beer: Why do flies like beer?

ScienceDaily (Nov. 17, 2011) ? Ever wondered why flies are attracted to beer? Entomologists at the University of California, Riverside have, and offer an explanation. They report that flies sense glycerol, a sweet-tasting compound that yeasts make during fermentation.

"Insects use their taste system to glean important information about the quality and nutritive value of food sources," said Anupama Dahanukar, an assistant professor of entomology, whose lab conducted the research. "Sugars signal high nutritive value to flies, but little is known about which chemical cues flies use for food sources that are low in sugar content -- such as beer."

Dahanukar's lab examined the feeding preference of the common fruit fly for beer and other products of yeast fermentation, and found that a receptor (a protein that serves as a gatekeeper) that is associated with neurons located in the fly's mouth-parts is instrumental in signaling a good taste for beer.

The receptor in question is Gr64e. Once a fly has settled on beer, Gr64e detects glycerol and transmits this information to the fly's neurons, which then influences the fly's behavioral response.

Dahanukar explained that flies use other receptors in their sensory organs to find food from a distance.

"Taste becomes important only after the fly makes physical contact with food," she said. "A fly first locates food sources using its odor receptors -- crucial for its long-range attraction to food. Then, after landing on food, the fly uses its taste system to sample the food for suitability in terms of nutrition and toxicity."

Dahanukar, a member of UCR's Institute for Integrative Genome Biology, explained that taste receptors also come into play when a female fly has to locate a suitable site for laying eggs.

"Females come to a decision after they have conducted intense probing of various potential sites," she said.

Study results appeared online Nov. 6 in Nature Neuroscience.

Dahanukar was joined in the project by Zev Wisotsky, Adriana Medina, and Erica Freeman -- all of whom work in her lab.

Wisotsky, a neuroscience graduate student and the first author of the research paper, performed the imaging, taste electrophysiology and behavior experiments. He was joined in his efforts by Freeman, a bioengineering graduate student, who performed the olfactory recordings; and Medina, a junior specialist in entomology, who performed the feeding preference experiments and molecular analysis.

The lab is poised now to move the research forward.

"How do you get information from the chemical environment to the brain -- not just in flies but other insects as well?" Dahanukar said. "How is that information processed to give rise to appropriate behavior? How does feeding behavior change with hunger? These are some questions we would like pursue."

The research project was supported in part by a Whitehall Foundation research grant to Dahanukar and a fellowship from the National Science Foundation Integrated Graduate Education Research and Training Program in Video Bioinformatics to Freeman.

Euro zone, technicals unnerve Wall Street (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Trigger-happy investors dumped stocks on Thursday, scared by the market's sudden fall through a key technical level brought on by more worries about Europe's debt troubles.

The S&P 500 steadily slipped through the morning until it broke through 1,225, when selling picked up in both the futures and cash markets.

Investors have been increasingly focused on Europe, and markets were cautious early as bond yields in Spain and Italy rose to levels viewed as unsustainable.

Some market sources cited squabbling between Democrats and Republicans on the congressional "supercommitee" formed to find ways to cut the U.S. debt.

But Peter Costa, president at Empire Executions said from the NYSE floor that none of the catalysts market participants were pointing to as triggering the sell-off was new "news."

"It doesn't take much if you're teetering on a support or resistance level," he said. "When you're on the precipice of either one, and something comes out, this computer-generated trading pops into effect and that usually accelerates any reaction you're seeing."

The fall around midday was swift and volume picked up once the 1,225 level was breached. About 2.83 million S&P E-Mini futures contracts traded on Thursday, with nearly 250,000 changing hands in an unusually busy 15-minute period when the market fell more than 1 percent.

The S&P struggled to break above 1,225 in August and September before piercing it on the way to a two-month high in late October. Computer-generated trading usually uses previous clusters of buying and selling as triggers.

The Dow Jones industrial average (.DJI) fell 134.71 points, or 1.13 percent, to 11,770.88. The S&P 500 (.SPX) lost 20.73 points, or 1.68 percent, to 1,216.18. The Nasdaq Composite (.IXIC) dropped 51.62 points, or 1.96 percent, to 2,587.99.

About 8.6 billion shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange, NYSE Amex and Nasdaq, above the current daily volume average of just above 8 billion shares.

Declining stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the NYSE by a ratio of more than 4 to 1, while on the Nasdaq, more than five stocks fell for every two that rose.

Declines in materials and energy shares accelerated with losses of more than 3 percent in crude futures and copper prices (.CMCU3). The S&P energy index (.GSPE) fell 2.1 percent and the S&P materials index (.GSPM) declined 2.9 percent.

Tech shares also dragged the market lower, with the S&P technology index (.GSPT) down 2.2 percent. The 10 major S&P 500 sectors closed in the red for the day.

The broad sell-off repeated the pattern seen lately in which stocks are treated as an asset class, with little differentiation between winners and losers.

"Pretty much everything's for sale. There's a move toward cash, and (US) bond prices are (up)," said Tom Schrader, managing director of U.S. equity trading at Stifel Nicolaus Capital Markets in Baltimore.

Earlier, Spanish bond yields hit their highest level since 1997 at a 10-year auction, while a French bond auction also drew high yields.

The 7 percent mark for bond yields that both Italian and Spanish benchmarks are close to is viewed as a line in the sand. Both Greece and Portugal were forced to seek bailouts after yields hit similar levels.

Investors have worried that the debt problems in the euro zone could tip the global economy into another recession, even as U.S. data has suggested the economy is picking up.

New U.S. claims for jobless benefits hit a seven-month low last week and permits for future home construction rebounded strongly in October, the latest data to suggest the economy was gaining traction.

While traders on the New York Stock Exchange floor gloomily watched prices fall, hundreds of Occupy Wall Street protesters marched, vowing to interfere with business. But trading was unaffected and about 100 protesters were arrested.

The Occupy Wall Street movement criticizes an economic system members view as favoring the rich and powerful. It has chosen Wall Street as a symbol of corporate greed.

HP Wireless Audio streams audio from your PC, arrives next month for $100 (video)

Yep, HP's on a tear today. In addition to unleashing a trio of redesigned Envy laptops, a refreshed dm4 and one aggressively priced Ultrabook, it has some news to share on the accessories front. The outfit unveiled its Wireless Audio system, which lets you stream audio files from your PC to as many as four compatible speakers. In terms of setup, that photo up there says almost everything: you plug a thumb-sized dongle into your USB port and a larger receiver into the speaker. In the box, you'll also find a software CD to fill in the missing UI piece. The big caveat here (aside from the relative messiness of connecting two intermediary pieces of equipment) is that the system only works with speakers that are compatible with KleerNet's wireless audio technology. In all, the system uses three frequencies (2.4, 5.2 and 5.8GHz) to cut latency and interference, and also supports 5.1 audio. You can pair it with up to four speakers, as we said, so long as they're within 100 feet of your laptop. It'll go on sale next month for $100, with one receiver and transmitter per box. If you're curious, we've got the full PR after the break, along with a short promo video.

Ozone from rock fracture could serve as earthquake early warning

Friday, November 18, 2011

Researchers the world over are seeking reliable ways to predict earthquakes, focusing on identifying seismic precursors that, if detected early enough, could serve as early warnings.

New research, published this week in the journal Applied Physics Letters, suggests that ozone gas emitted from fracturing rocks could serve as an indicator of impending earthquakes. Ozone is a natural gas, a byproduct of electrical discharges into the air from several sources, such as from lightning, or, according to the new research, from rocks breaking under pressure.

Scientists in the lab of Ra?l A. Baragiola, a professor of engineering physics in the University of Virginia School of Engineering and Applied Science set up experiments to measure ozone produced by crushing or drilling into different igneous and metamorphic rocks, including granite, basalt, gneiss, rhyolite and quartz. Different rocks produced different amounts of ozone, with rhyolite producing the strongest ozone emission.

Some time prior to an earthquake, pressures begin to build in underground faults. These pressures fracture rocks, and presumably, would produce detectable ozone.

To distinguish whether the ozone was coming from the rocks or from reactions in the atmosphere, the researchers conducted experiments in pure oxygen, nitrogen, helium and carbon dioxide. They found that ozone was produced by fracturing rocks only in conditions containing oxygen atoms, such as air, carbon dioxide and pure oxygen molecules, indicating that it came from reactions in the gas. This suggests that rock fractures may be detectable by measuring ozone.

Baragiola began the study by wondering if animals, which seem ? at least anecdotally ? to be capable of anticipating earthquakes, may be sensitive to changing levels of ozone, and therefore able to react in advance to an earthquake. It occurred to him that if fracturing rocks create ozone, then ozone detectors might be used as warning devices in the same way that animal behavioral changes might be indicators of seismic activity.

He said the research has several implications.

"If future research shows a positive correlation between ground-level ozone near geological faults and earthquakes, an array of interconnected ozone detectors could monitor anomalous patterns when rock fracture induces the release of ozone from underground and surface cracks," he said.

"Such an array, located away from areas with high levels of ground ozone, could be useful for giving early warning to earthquakes."

He added that detection of an increase of ground ozone might also be useful in anticipating disasters in tunnel excavation, landslides and underground mines.

Ex-Myspace CEO resigns as Zynga executive

NEW YORK (AP) ? Owen Van Natta, the former CEO of Myspace, is stepping down from an executive role at Zynga but will stay on its board of directors.

Van Natta, 41, was chief revenue officer at Facebook before he joined Myspace in 2009. He was hired at Zynga as executive vice president of business operations in August 2010.

Zynga Inc. said in a regulatory filing Thursday that he will no longer have a role with the company's day-to-day operations.

Of the 6.8 million shares that Van Natta was granted as part of his employment at Zynga, only 2.1 million had vested as of his resignation. This means he forfeits 4.6 million shares before Zynga's initial public offering of stock.

Zynga is expected to go public by the end of the year.
