Empire Attire ? 5 Inane Sports that Beat Freeskiing to the ...

by: Nathaniel Cook

Here?s the latest installment in our series on sports that beat our beloved freeskiing to the Olympic stage. Coming up at #2 is a sport that hits particularly close to home for those of us here at Empire:

2. Speed Skiing

Though not technically a part of the Olympic games, speed skiing was a demonstration sport at the ?92 games in France. The sport itself offends all sensibilities of decency and ability when it comes to snow sports. You know the guys on the slopes who don?t turn, burn past you, and then wipe out 50 yards down? That?s these guys. This is a sport dedicated to going in a straight line with no regard for soul or grace. Coincidentally, the Olympics dropped demonstration sports from their event roster the same year. That?s what is known as a ?Samaranch? in the Olympics biz.

At the end of the day, speed skiing requires only two real skills: being aerodynamic, and having long skis. For amateurs, the ability to avoid the disgruntled stares of people they almost killed while belligerently flying down the mountain is also a plus. In the illustrious family of snow sports, speed skiing hold the spot of the cousin who at the 7-11 and puts all of his money into a 1986 Pontiac Firebird with and REO Speedwagon hood decal. Truly a blemish in the storied halls of skiing. It?s unfortunate that these guys are out there, sullying the name of the rest of us in snow sports. Oh well, at least they aren?t wearing jester hats.
