NBA Las Vegas Summer League: Raptors crush Nuggets, as Lakers, Cavaliers and Bobcats also advance

The higher seed prevailed early on Thursday (early Friday, PHL time), when the Toronto Raptors, Los Angeles Lakers, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Charlotte Bobcats beat their opponents in round two of the 2013 NBA Las Vegas Summer League Championships.

In the first game of the day, the seventh-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers held on to beat the tenth-ranked San Antonio Spurs, 72-66 at the Cox Pavilion.

The Cavaliers led 56-49 at the end of the third, but the Spurs used an 11-2 run to knot the game at 65-all, 3:21 left, thanks to a three-point barrage. However, the reigning Western Conference Champions' summer league team was then held to just a point the rest of the way, as Justin Harper and Carrick Felix put the finishing touches on this one.

2012 fourth overall pick Dion Waiters led the Cavs with 27 points, while the Spurs drew 19 markers from 2012 second-round pick, Marcus Denmon.

At the Thomas and Mack Center, the eighth seed Los Angeles Lakers similarly dominated the number nine squad Milwaukee Bucks late, en route to a 72-68 win.

In a game that saw 10 lead changes and nine deadlocks total, the Lakers scored seven straight to snatch the advantage away from the Bucks, going up 71-66 behind scores from Lester Hudson, Robert Sacre and Elias Harris, 1:17 left.

Milwaukee missed on three-pointers by Ish Smith and John Shurna, but an offensive rebound led to a Nate Wolters lay-up, to make it a single-possession difference, 71-68, 10.6 seconds left. They then had a chance to tie after Chris Douglas-Roberts lost the ball to Dominique Jones, but the latter's trey was offline, and Sacre put this one on ice with a split at the line a possession later.

Forward Marcus Landry led all scorers with 18, while Sacre produced 16 points, eight rebounds and a block for the Lakers. Milwaukee drew a monster effort from John Henson with 16 points, 13 rebounds and three rejections, but he got very little support from his teammates.

In the only blowout of the first batch of games, the sixth-ranked Toronto Raptors led for most of the way after halfway through the first period, keeping the Denver Nuggets (22nd) at arm's length, 95-78.

Following a back-and-forth exchange, a triple by Quincy Miller gave the Nuggets a slight lead, 18-17, 4:06 remaining in the first, but it was all Toronto from then on, as the Raptors unleashed a 14-2 run spanning the initial two periods, for a 31-22 score.

The Nuggets got as close as five in the third, after a split at the line by Evan Fournier, 50-45, 8:27 to play, but their opponents simply had more firepower, as the likes of Dwight Buycks, Coby Karl and Micah Downs sank three-pointers.

Six Raptors finished with at least 10 points, led by Dwight Buycks' double-double of 18 points and 10 assists. 2012 lottery pick Terrence Ross added 17 markers and eight boards, while center Jonas Valanciunas put up 15 points, 12 rebounds, and two blocks.

Jordan Hamilton once again carried the scoring load for Denver, unloading 25 on 10-of-21 shooting. Quincy Miller and Luke Harangody scored 10 apiece.

Back at the Thomas and Mack Center, number five seeds Charlotte Bobcats led big early, but nearly let the 21st ranked Memphis Grizzlies back in late, before settling for a 92-84 triumph.

Charlotte led 53-32 near the end of the first half, but Memphis looked like a different team in the third, systematically hacking away at their deficit. Vander Blue then made his presence felt by canning back-to-back triples and adding a lay-up to make it a one-point affair, 63-62, but Brandon Triche scored the last points of the third, for a 65-62 Bobcats lead with a quarter left.

Jerome Dyson and 2013 first round pick Cody Zeller took over in the fourth though for Charlotte, scoring 17 of their side's 27, including the last six of the game, to secure this win.

Dyson scored 21 points in addition to nine assists, while Zeller produced 18 points and nine boards. Jeffrey Taylor also scored 18 to complete the troika for Charlotte.

Vander Blue led the Grizzlies by coming off the bench for 24 markers, hitting 5-of-8 from downtown. Jack Cooley added 16 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks from the center spot, while Donte Greene uncorked 15 markers and dished out six dimes. - AMD, GMA News
