Broadband TV News looks ahead to the new Media Platform conference and exhibition, due to be held in Budapest later this month.
The Hungarian cable industry has held its annual conference and exhibition in Tihany, by Lake Balaton, for many years. Why has it decided to now move its location to Budapest?
The business circumstances of cable television services and competing platforms underwent many changes in the 10 years during we held the conference, for our members only, in Tihany. A lot of new equipment emerged and many new channels were launched and presented to cable operators. Regulation became much more sophisticated and new digital technology business models, including IP-based methods of content distribution and OTT, came into existence. All these things raised many new issues that had to be discussed with the participation of all stakeholders. We realised that in our part of the world the problems are almost the same as elsewhere.
As Hungary plays a definitive role in the development of the region?s media industry and cable programme distribution segment, the organisers felt that Budapest could be at the forefront of providing a high-level opportunity for the region?s market players to meet and hold talks in a professional forum promoting cooperation. An international conference promoting dialogue between media and programme distribution platforms and related fields should result in audiences being offered more varied and even higher quality content.
That is why we rebranded our internal conference and made it into a new event called Media Platform.
How will Media Platform differ from previous events?
The scope of the event has become much deeper and wider. The aim of the long-awaited regional conference and exhibition in Budapest is expected to become ? according to the vision of the organisers ? the definitive professional event of the Central and Eastern European region within a few years, allowing all interested players to review and process current issues, trends and hot topics of the media distribution industry; to introduce new goals, initiatives, services and technical innovations; and, of course, to arrange business meetings, discussions and networking.
Looking more generally at the industry, what in your view are the biggest challenges currently facing cable in Hungary?
First of all, we have to prepare our networks for providing digital services (including digital television and broadband internet) anywhere that subscribers want. We also have to be prepared to compete with other digital platforms like DTH, DVB-T and OTT services.
How can these challenges be addressed?
It needs technical development and further investment, and current regulations like the public utility tax and telecom tax place extra burdens on us and make this slower. Regulators have to adopt a platform-neutral approach for new services entering the market. As our main task is to represent our interests, we have a lot to discuss with the government and national regulatory authority.
How do you expect the industry to develop in the next 2-3 years?
In the next couple of years we have to find the proper business models, regulatory framework and individual company strategies for the emerging new digital era, where every stakeholder can provide any type of digital services, any time and anywhere.
