ASK IRA: Is NBA East top heavy, or quality throughout?

MIAMI?

Q: I do agree the East is more difficult. But doesn't that favor the Heat, as well? It's not as if we have to verse every team to repeat. All those "stacked" teams have to verse each other. And I don't think any other team is more prepared for that than this one. The harder it is for us, the harder it is for them. -- Chaise, Indianapolis.

A: I'm actually not sold that the East, 1 through 15, is stronger than last season. The contenders in the East should be able to pad their records against plenty of bottom feeders. But I do think that even for the conference's top seed, there could be more than one compelling round before the NBA Finals. There was nothing last season in the East like what the Heat, Bulls, Pacers and Nets can offer this season. This season's Eastern conference semifinals could be as fierce as any East final in recent years, including the Heat's seven-game escape against the Pacers in last season's Eastern Conference finals.

Q: Those who unfairly assumed and jumped to conclusions about Birdman should write and open apology? -- Carlos.

A: What matters most is that Chris Andersen can put the episode behind him. In retrospect, that had to be an incredible burden for any athlete to play through.

Q: Tracy McGrady says Michael Beasley "doesn't get it." The guy chose to approach the Heat, offer himself as a training-camp tryout with no guaranteed contract, in effect saying, "It's on me to prove my worth."? Doesn't that sound like someone who "gets it"? (Sorry about another Beasley question, but I had to ask since the guy has taken such a beating in the press.) -- Jack, Sanibel.

A: I think the questions with Michael have been about what he previously was. All that should matter from this point forward is what he can be. We'll be able to find that out soon enough, with training camp opening Oct. 1.
