AUSTIN, TX- (WMC-TV) - An Ole Miss student, who traveled to Austin, TX to catch the game against the Texas Longhorns, found himself in the hospital rather than at the game Saturday.? A punch in the face resulted in brain surgery for Carson Otter.
While in Austin, Otter was attacked on the street as bars were closing down early Saturday morning. His injuries were serious enough to require brain surgery.
"He was there for the ball game and as I understand it, he got separated from his group of friends," said Ole Miss Dean of Students Sparky Reardon.
According to The Clarion Ledger, Otter, of Bloomington, Indiana, was walking down the street around the time bars were closing. Witnesses say Otter exchanged words with occupants of a passing vehicle. Someone in the vehicle got out and punched Otter.
"He is being treated in Austin, Texas as a result of an assault and we are as a university doing everything we can to support them through prayers and good wishes," said Reardon.
The Daily Mississippian, Ole Miss' student paper, reports that Otter's mother posted on Facebook that her son had brain surgery and has since opened his eyes.
"We encourage all of our students, as they travel whether on the road, in the cities, when they go to away games that they exercise good caution but we do realize things happen that are beyond our control," said Reardon.
Otter is in the Sigma Nu fraternity and a Management Information Systems major in the University of Mississippi School of Business Administration.
