California high-speed rail's groundbreaking is delayed again

A groundbreaking on construction of California's high-speed rail system is being pushed back another few months, further beyond this summer as was planned.

The Mercury News reports construction on the initial stretch is being held up as the state works to buy more land and equipment, and a pair of lawsuits over the system work their way through the courts.

Still, rail officials say they are on schedule, with initial work such as soil testing and land surveying already underway.

They say they are ready to begin construction of the initial $1 billion, 29-mile stretch in the Central Valley, though the contractor is waiting until it can proceed on several miles of the segment at once.
