Rep. Vern Buchanan is under investigation by the Justice Department for allegations that he asked a former business associate to reimburse employees who made donations to his campaign account, a local paper reported.
The Bradenton Herald, which is based in the Republican?s western Florida district, first reported that the DOJ was investigating whether Buchanan, a former car dealership owner, asked his associate, Sam Kazran, to encourage employees to make straw donations to the lawmaker.

Buchanan, in his third term in Congress, is a finance official at the National Republican Congressional Committee, which is charged with helping elect Republicans to the House.
Sally Tibbetts, a campaign spokesman for Buchanan, said in a statement that it has ?always been our expectation that the Justice Department would review the [FEC?s] findings.?
?The FEC carefully reviewed these politically motivated charges and concluded, based upon the factual record, that Vern did nothing wrong,? Tibbetts said. ?We are confident that the Justice Department will reach the same conclusion and look forward to cooperating fully.?
In the statement, Tibbetts said that the campaign has asked DOJ to probe ?the conduct of those who have tried to exploit the threat of spreading malicious falsehoods about Vern for personal financial gain.? The Herald reported that Kazran and a Florida attorney tried to make Buchanan pay $43 million in hush money about the alleged illegal campaign activity.
