ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) - Once the U.S. women's soccer team's victory tour suddenly turned into a farewell tour for coach Pia Sundhage, Abby Wambach - in her homecoming, no less - wanted to send her off on a fitting note Saturday.

Wambach scored twice and added an assist in an 8-0 exhibition win over Costa Rica, before heading to the bench and giving Sundhage - who will coach her native Sweden - a long, warm hug.

"I never do that," Wambach said, referring to the hug. "That's a sign of where it's going to be hard not to leave a field and get into the locker room and not see her. I love Pia so much, because she has shown me what it's like to love the game."

Hours before kickoff, Sundhage informed the players of her decision to step down as coach and return to her native Sweden. She will depart following a successful five-year term in which she led the Americans to back-to-back gold medals and their first World Cup final in 12 years.

"It's really a difficult decision to make as you can imagine being around those guys. They make me look good," Sundhage said, pointing to her players following the game. Ultimately, she said, the decision came down to her heart in pursuing what she considers her dream job.

The Swedish Football Association announced on its website Saturday that it has reached a deal with Sundhage to take over as women's coach Dec. 1, which is a day after her contract with U.S. Soccer expires.

"I have long dreamed of becoming Sweden coach and now I am so happy," Sundhage said.

Sundhage is still the face of women's soccer in Sweden, which she led to the title as a player at the first European Women's Championship in 1984 and the bronze medal at the inaugural Women's World Cup in 1991.

She will stay as the U.S. coach for the next two games before leaving her job. The U.S. team will play a pair of exhibitions against Australia on Sept. 16 in Carson, Calif., and Sept. 19 in Commerce City, Colo. The U.S. then plays two-time World Cup champion Germany on Oct. 20 in Bridgeview, Ill., and Oct. 23 in East Hartford, Conn.

"Today we were kind of blindsided," midfielder Carli Lloyd said. "It was a bit of emotional and it's sad. And whatever lies ahead in her future, she's going to be phenomenal at it. I'm happy for her, but she's going to be missed."

U.S. Soccer will begin searching for a new coach immediately, but has no timetable for hiring a successor. There is no major tournament until the next World Cup in 2015.

Federation President Sunil Gulati said Sundhage indicated to him she was leaning toward returning to Sweden during a conversation the two had days after the women won the gold medal in London.

"It's always been a dream of hers," Gulati said. "It's not a sad day. It's a happy day as far as I'm concerned. We're happy for Pia. And we're happy that we've got the best women's team in the world."

The Americans improved to 89-6-10 since Sundhage took over in 2007.

Megan Rapinoe had two goals and an assist as the U.S. extended its winning streak to 12 and improved to 9-0-0 against Costa Rica. Lloyd, Alex Morgan, Sydney Leroux and Heather O'Reilly also scored.

Sundhage's decision partly overshadowed Wambach's trip home to Rochester, where she is one of the city's most high-profile and adored athletes. A sold-out crowd of more than 13,208 attended the game, and Wambach jerseys were all over the stands.

Wambach was welcomed with a rousing cheer as she - in her bright yellow cleats - led the team on to the field and waved to the crowd. A day earlier, Wambach was honored by having the entry path to the stadium named in her honor.

The fans got what they wanted when Wambach headed in a cross from Rachel Buehler in the 24th minute on Saturday. As the crowd erupted, Wambach headed toward the bench where she was mobbed by her teammates.

She scored again seven minutes later to give her 145 goals in international play, which is second on the all-time list - and 13 behind former teammate Mia Hamm.

"I couldn't be more proud to have Rochester be my hometown, this be the first game of our victory tour and it be the way it just was," Wambach said. "It was electric."

Sundhage got the festivities off to a rousing start during a pre-game interview at midfield by breaking into song when asked what message she wanted to deliver fans regarding her departure. To cheers from the sold-out Sahlen's Stadium that holds more than 13,000 people, Sundhage took the microphone and sang a few lines from the Bob Dylan-written "If Not For You," which became a hit for Olivia Newton-John.

It proved a fitting coda - she also sang a Dylan tune at the first team meeting five years ago.

"English is not my mother tongue, and I have a hard time to express how grateful I am and how lucky. I'm the lucky one," Sundhage said of why she elected to sing. "I wanted to tell the fans, youth soccer, the coaches I've been working with, staff and the players, if not for you, you know. If not for you, I wouldn't find the door. I wouldn't be where I am."

Angola's ruling MPLA party wins 74 percent of vote

LUANDA, Angola (AP) ? President Jose Eduardo dos Santos' ruling party has won 74 percent of the national vote, assuring his government, in power for 33 years, another five years in power.

With more than 73 percent of the votes counted from Friday's poll, the state election commission said Sunday that the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola has gained a large majority, but it is down from the 82 percent that it won in 2008.

The largest opposition party, UNITA, won 18 percent of the vote, nearly twice its share from 2008. And newcomer party, CASA-CE, gained 4.6 percent. Both opposition parties criticized the elections for not being free and fair.

The elections were largely peaceful and relatively well-organized in this country of 19 million that is Africa's second largest oil producer.

Yerba Mate and Cancer. | elephant journal

Yerba Mate may not be so healthy, after all: ?risk of lung cancer 60% higher.?

I?ve been a fan of yerba mate for years. I?ve been friends with the founders of Pixie Mate, and particularly Guayaki Yerba Mate, one of the biggest and best and mindfullest mate companies out there.

So it was a rude surprise to read about yerba mate and health, and hear more about cancer and PAH than antioxidants and wakeful boost.

While I?ll wait to hear (I welcome more info from my friends) and learn more, it seems the science is pretty well conclusive on this point: drinking more than a little mate, especially with the leaves soaking, is bad news.

With thanks for the tip to Tom, one of our best troublemaking commenters. ~ Waylon Lewis, ed.

Every liberal hipster hippies? favorite natural, non-Western drink: exposed?

Read the science here. Excerpt:

Yerba Mate and Cancer

?Yerba mate has a reputation as a health drink and indeed, a Google search on yerba mate yields over 3 million websites, many of which tout the benefits of this drink. As well, yerba mate commonly is referred to as ?the ancient drink of health and friendship? by those promote it?.Regardless of the concerns raised by this research, yerba mate continues to be promoted as a health drink and researchers??

Despite its healthy reputation, numerous research studies have linked regular drinking of yerba mate with increased risk of cancers of the mouth, head and neck, esophagus, bladder, larynx, kidney, and lung and non-Hodgkin?s lymphoma (NHL) (2-18). Yerba mate drinking is most consistently associated with esophageal cancer (4-6,8,9,13-16,19). Some studies suggest that it is the very hot temperature at which yerba mate is typically consumed that increases esophageal cancer risk, rather than yerba mate itself (13,15).

Other research supports that yerba mate naturally contains carcinogenic (cancer causing) compounds, and this is the reason why the drink is linked with increased cancer risk (20-22). Two research programs that evaluate carcinogenic activity of hundreds of chemicals, mixtures, and natural substances are the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) Evaluation of Carcinogenic Risks to Humans and the US National Toxicology Program?s Report of Carcinogens. The information from these agencies places yerba mate in the category of having a moderate level of evidence of posing a cancer risk to humans (20).

For much more, click here. The study points out that drinking mate in tea bags, where the leaves are discarded after brief soaking, is far better less worse than drinking mate in the traditional matter, where the leaves are continually steeped.

(AP) ? Unhappy with his life as a Marine stationed in California, Terence Tyler posed a question three years ago on Twitter: "is it normal to want to kill ALL of ur coworkers?"

Struggling with depression, he left the Marines and recently started working at a supermarket in New Jersey.

On Friday morning, Tyler shot two co-workers and himself, police said. The 23-year-old, clad in desert camouflage gear, opened fire at a Pathmark store in Old Bridge Township, authorities said.

Authorities are investigating his motive, but family members said Tyler was discharged from the Marines two years ago after suffering from depression and had never gotten over his mother's death about five years ago.

Authorities said Tyler left his job as an overnight clerk at the Pathmark about 3:30 a.m. He drove off and returned to the store shortly afterward with a handgun and an assault rifle, Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce Kaplan said. About a dozen workers were in the closed store, putting new prices into a computer.

Tyler fired more than 16 rounds from his rifle ? shooting at an employee standing outside and blowing out windows, authorities said. He shot at five other workers in an aisle, killing Christina LoBrutto, 18, and Bryan Breen, 24, the prosecutor said.

Tyler, who began working at the supermarket less than two weeks ago, then drew his handgun and killed himself, Kaplan said.

Several ammunition magazines were recovered along with the rifle and a .45-caliber handgun, he said.

"I do not believe that they were specifically targeted," Kaplan said of the two victims. "I believe everybody in the store was a target."

John Niccollai, president of a foodworkers union, said many of the employees escaped harm when an assistant manager directed them toward a back door.

Breen and LoBrutto were both cashiers. They normally worked day shifts, but pulled overnight shifts every few weeks to put in new price changes, Niccollai said. Tyler began work for Pathmark Aug. 20 as a night clerk, stocking shelves.

Pathmark worker Miranda Miranda said she steered clear of Tyler.

"The way he looked at me, he gave me an uneasy vibe," she said.

Miranda usually worked the overnight shift Thursday but said LoBrutto agreed to work the shift for her a few weeks ago. "That could've been me," Miranda said.

Tyler was discharged from the Marines in 2010, nearly two years in the service at Twentynine Palms, Calif., according to the Marines. The infantryman from New York City never served overseas, said Marine spokeswoman Capt. Kendra Motz. She wouldn't comment on the circumstances of his discharge.

Tyler's Twitter account, which has a photograph identified by family members as Tyler, interspersed posts about hating Marine life, expressions of violence, and his take on football, movies, women and other interests.

"smh is it normal to want to kill ALL of ur coworkers?Maybe but I'm actually in a position where I can, smh," he wrote in June 2009, using the handle (at)Tylerbkstyle and the abbreviation "smh" for "shaking my head."

Tyler tweeted months later about killing.

"I'm starting to see why plp go on killin sprees," he wrote. And these (obscenity) are reeeeeeally pushin my kill everyone I see button."

At the top of Tyler's Facebook page was the motto: "Be optimistic. All the people you hate are going to eventually die."

Christopher Dyson, Tyler's uncle, said Tyler left the Marines after suffering from depression. A cousin said Tyler had been hospitalized.

Tyler, who also lived in San Diego, left California in June for New Jersey, where he lived with his sister and uncle.

"He was a quiet cat, you know?" said Dyson, who works at the store and helped Tyler get a job there.

His cousin, Shanteya Dyson, said Tyler had not been the same since his mother died of cancer.

"That was his best friend. He was always a quiet guy. But he got more quiet. He really didn't speak at all. He was just blank," Dyson said.

Tyler spent the July 4 weekend drinking at Jersey shore bars with Manase Acheantong.

"We went out. We had drinks. He was a normal kid. He didn't start no fights. He didn't seem crazy," said Acheantong, 25, of Old Bridge.

Pathmark's parent company, Montvale-based Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co., said the company was "deeply saddened" by the shooting and was cooperating with investigators.

LoBrutto and Breen both graduated from Old Bridge School. LoBrutto was a horn player in the school band and graduated this year, Schools Superintendent Timothy Brennan said. Breen graduated in 2006.

Jessica Ruano knew LoBrutto from school. "She was a really bubbly girl," said Ruano, 16. "She was silly. She was sweet."

Hubble spots a supernova in NGC 5806

ScienceDaily (Aug. 31, 2012) ? A new image from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope shows NGC 5806, a spiral galaxy in the constellation Virgo (the Virgin). It lies around 80 million light years from Earth. Also visible in this image is a supernova explosion called SN 2004dg.

The exposures that are combined into this image were carried out in early 2005 in order to help pinpoint the location of the supernova, which exploded in 2004. The afterglow from this outburst of light, caused by a giant star exploding at the end of its life, can be seen as a faint yellowish dot near the bottom of the galaxy.

NGC 5806 was chosen to be one of a number of galaxies in a study into supernovae because Hubble's archive already contained high resolution imagery of the galaxy, collected before the star had exploded. Since supernovae are both relatively rare, and impossible to predict with any accuracy, the existence of such before-and-after images is precious for astronomers who study these violent events.

Aside from the supernova, NGC 5806 is a relatively unremarkable galaxy: it is neither particularly large or small, nor especially close or distant.

The galaxy's bulge (the densest part in the center of the spiral arms) is a so-called disk-type bulge, in which the spiral structure extends right to the center of the galaxy, instead of there being a large elliptical bulge of stars present. It is also home to an active galaxy nucleus, a supermassive black hole which is pulling in large amounts of matter from its immediate surroundings. As the matter spirals around the black hole, it heats up and emits powerful radiation.

This image is produced from three exposures in visible and infrared light, observed by Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys. The field of view is approximately 3.3 by 1.7 arcminutes.

A version of this image was entered into the Hubble's Hidden Treasures Image Processing Competition by contestant Andre van der Hoeven (who won second prize in the competition for his image of Messier 77). Hidden Treasures is an initiative to invite astronomy enthusiasts to search the Hubble archive for stunning images that have never been seen by the general public. The competition has now closed.

World Series of MMA to televise live event on NBC Sports in November

Posted by John Petit on Thursday, August 30, 2012 at 8:30 pm? 2 Comments?

According to the Nevada State Athletic Commission, new MMA promotion tabbed World Series of Fighting has been issued a license to promote events in the State with a targeted date of November 3 as its first event. It is believed the Planet Hollywood Arena will play host to the company?s initial show, providing a seating capacity of 6,000 attendees.

Also, on the documents turned into the NSAC, the promotion listed that the event will be televised on NBC Sports Network (formerly Versus). However, the broadcast date or actual deal haven?t been confirmed by the network.

MMAWeekly was first to report the matter.

The debut card, said to contain more than ten bouts, has not been announced though an ad on the company website is promoting a bout between UFC veteran Roger Huerta and Kurt Southern. Also on the site, a list revealing the company?s roster contains a few familiar names like Rolles Gracie, Marcus Aurelio, Thales Leites and Gilbert Yvel. The website also notes a tournament-format, stating, ?Fighters will compete in five weight classes ranging from 155 to 265 pounds. ?The tournament will start and finish within a twelve-month period and five champions will be crowned.?

It is also being reported that K1 and MMA fighter Ray Sefo will be serving as the organization?s president.
