BT splits retail division into consumer, business units - FierceTelecom

BT (NYSE: BT) is realigning its retail division into two separate businesses--BT Consumer and BT Business--an effort the incumbent telco says will enable it to improve customer service and deliver on its strategic priorities. ?

Under this new structure, the service provider plans to market broadband-based consumer services and enhance its brand awareness with UK-based small to medium enterprises (SMEs). ?

Leading BT Consumer as its CEO will be John Petter, the managing director of the Consumer unit within BT Retail, while BT Business' CEO will be Graham Sutherland, currently managing director of the Business unit within BT Retail.

Gavin Patterson, Retail CEO, said in a release that "It is time however for the business to be split in two given the intensely competitive nature of the consumer market and our strong ambitions in the business space."

Petter and Sutherland will continue to report to Patterson when he takes over the post of BT Group CEO from Ian Livingston in September.

Today, BT Retail consists of four customer-facing units: BT Consumer, BT Business (which supplies SMEs), BT Enterprises and BT Ireland.?

When the transition is complete, Enterprises and Ireland will merge with BT Business to form the new BT Business division while BT Wi-fi and the consumer part of BT Ireland will transfer to BT Consumer.?

Google Spurns Pedophile Warning System

google

Justin Sullivan/Getty Images

Google has opted to reject a paedophile warning system which would flash up cautionary messages to people conducting obscene internet searches that they can be tracked when certain keywords are used.

It follows the decision by search rivals Bing and Yahoo! to automatically flash up warnings in such instances, measures which experts predict could cut by half the volume of traffic directed to such material.

Instead Google insists that its existing methods at tackling the problem are more effective, stoking the ire of child safety campaigners.

The Microsoft backed warning system would flash up a message when specific search terms were enetered, stating: ?Warning! Child abuse material is illegal,? alongside a link to counseling advice.

Commenting on the plan John Carr, a government adviser on online child safety, said: ?The splash pages will not stop determined paedophiles but while they are very dangerous, they are a small number.

?These messages will warn off a larger number of men who are interested in these pages and stop them in their tracks. At the beginning an interest in these images starts off as a mild curiosity but they get drawn in and in some cases it can lead to rape and abuse.

?These messages show them they are not anonymous. Half would be put off by this.?

What happens if addicts get no high from the drugs they take?

Researchers at Case Western Reserve and Illinois State universities have received a $390,000 National Institute on Drug Abuse grant to help answer the question.

Addiction experts believe a mechanism that robs drugs of their ability to hook users could treat and possibly cure drug abuse and even dependence.

Pedram Mohseni, an associate professor of electrical engineering and computer science at Case Western Reserve, is buildingand will soon start testinga brain implant aimed at sensing changes in the dopamine levels when a rat is given addictive substances and suppressing the reward-related signals associated with a pleasurable high.

"The idea is to build a closed-loop microsystem that senses and identifies changes in the dopamine levels induced by drugs of abuse, then activates a stimulator in real time to suppress the reward-related signals that promote drug-seeking behavior," said Mohseni, the leader of device development for the research project.

Mohseni has a first-generation prototype implant nearly ready and will take the device to Paul A. Garris, a professor of biological sciences at Illinois State, who will lead device testing in anesthetized laboratory rats as early as next month.

Mohseni's system is connected to a chemical microsensor that senses changes in the brain dopamine levels when a highly addictive amphetamine is administered.

The drug hyperactivates phasic dopamine signaling, or transient dopamine concentration spikes, which control brain reward pathways. This can lead to altered synaptic signaling and in turn overvaluation of cues predicting drug availability, leading to drug reinforcement, Mohseni said.

A computer circuit in the microsystem will use algorithms to determine if the drug-induced phasic dopamine signaling exceeds a threshold level set in the absence of drugs. When the threshold is exceeded, the system will then send electrical impulses to a stimulating electrode in the brain. The impulses are designed to inhibit dopamine neurons, silencing the phasic dopamine signaling.

Mohseni and Garris will spend the next two years evaluating and improving the microsystem. They plan to then seek another grant to test the device on rats that are awake and monitor changes in behavior.

Toyota Prius Vs. Ford C-Max Hybrid: Pros And Cons

For several years, Toyota had the hybrid market pretty much sewn up with its Prius.

Okay, so it never reached the heady economy highs of the original Honda Insight, but it was far more practical and electric running made it the hybrid of choice in city driving.

That's until the Ford C-Max Hybrid appeared, at any rate. If you're in the market for one of the cars, the chances are you're also in the market for the other--so we've pulled together the pros and cons of each to help you decide on your next hybrid family car.

Toyota Prius

We'll start with the incumbent challenger. Loved and loathed in equal measure, few cars split opinion like the Prius--but it has earned its gas-sipping reputation on merit, and remains one of the most economical non-plugins on the road.

The current Prius largely treads the same ground as the car that first hit the market wearing the now-famous badge.

That means an Atkinson cycle gasoline engine (once 1.5 liters, now 1.8 liters) paired with a hybrid system via an epicyclic gearbox. The benefit of this is a system that can choose between gasoline or electricity depending on road conditions--sometimes both, and if sitting in traffic, sometimes neither.

The use of electric drive at lower speeds means fuel consumption is low in city driving. On electricity alone, it'll only go just over a mile, but in practice many drivers find the engine cutting out quite frequently in traffic. Transition between gas and electric is more or less seamless.

Of course, these are all traits shared with the Ford. So what are the Prius's pros and cons?

Pros

  • It does get slightly better on-paper fuel economy than the Ford, at 50 mpg to 47 mpg combined
  • It's also better in the real world. On the EPA's fueleconomy.gov site, 2013 Prius drivers are averaging around 46 mpg (11 vehicles), and C-Max Hybrid drivers only 39 mpg, based on over 100 cars.
  • The Prius has a slightly lower base price--$24,200 plays $25,200.
  • Reputation: The Prius is a well-established fuel-sipper. The Ford has to earn that reputation.

Cons

  • The Prius attracts an unusual degree of loathing from other drivers--few cars make such a statement about their driver, and some may be uncomfortable with this
  • Styling both inside and out is starting to age
  • No longer features cutting-edge tech, either beneath the surface or in the cabin--the Prius's interior is a little archaic these days
  • Less than spectacular to drive

Head to page 2 to find out the pros and cons of running a Ford C-Max--and you can discover more on the Prius by reading our complete guide.

Pope says gays must not be judged or marginalized

ROME (Reuters) - Pope Francis, in some of the most compassionate words from any pontiff on homosexuals, said gays should not be judged or marginalized and should be integrated into society.

In a conversation with journalists on board the plane bringing him back from a visit to Brazil on Sunday night, Francis defended gays from discrimination, but also referred to the Catholic Church's universal Catechism, which says that while homosexual orientation is not sinful homosexual acts are.

Francis arrived back in Rome on Monday after a triumphant week-long tour of Brazil which climaxed with a huge gathering on Rio de Janeiro's famed Copacabana beach which organizers estimated to have attracted more than 3 million people.

'Total Divas' episode 1 recap: Tempers flare during WrestleMania Week

It?s a little more than a week before WrestleMania 29, and the Divas of WWE are getting restless. Personal, professional and romantic worlds collide for The Bella Twins, The Funkadactyls and Natalya on the eve of The Show of Shows, and the arrival of two newcomers only complicates matters for WWE?s warrior princesses on E!'s "Total Divas" premiere.

Watch highlights of the "Total Divas" premiere.

The Bellas, who recently returned after a nearly yearlong absence from WWE, are looking to re-establish themselves as the queen bees of WWE, and their scheduled WrestleMania mixed tag team match against The Funkadactyls is their best way to prove it. But while they look to hone their minds and bodies in preparation for WrestleMania, matters of the heart rear their head. Nikki Bella, concerned her relationship with John Cena isn?t progressing as fast as her sister Brie?s union with Daniel Bryan, confronts the 11-time WWE Champion about his intentions over dinner. Although The Champ stops short of putting a ring on it, Nikki leaves the New York City hot spot with his assurance that she?s the only woman for him.

Check out "Total Divas" premiere photos.

Meanwhile, veteran Diva Natalya grapples with the disappointment of not only being left off the WrestleMania card, but also being assigned to ?babysit? the two newest Diva hopefuls, Eva Marie and JoJo, for the week. Her wariness of the twosome only grows when Eva Marie is instructed to dye her brown locks blonde to differentiate her from The Bella Twins, but the newcomer defies orders and instead turns her hair fire-engine red. While Eva Marie?s gall impresses WWE officials, The Bellas still remain leery of the young lioness looking to take their spot, and engage in some friendly hazing to remind the newbies of who runs things.

The week comes to a head at WrestleMania itself, but all the petty rivalries are rocked in tandem when the Divas? match is cut after the previous bout runs over its allotted time limit. Having been scrubbed from The Show of Shows, the five Divas put aside their differences and turn to each other for comfort and advice, as well as find friendship in shared disappointment ? for now, at least.

Miss the premiere episode of ?Total Divas?? Catch a special rerun Monday night after Raw on USA Network. New episodes of ?Total Divas? air Sunday nights at 10/9 CT on E!. For more on "Total Divas," visit?wwedivas.com and check out E!?s totaldivas.com.

Cati Holland poses for a picture at her house in the Israeli city of Hadera. Holland found out from an Israel-based social media genealogy company that is using the Internet to help match property stolen by the Nazis to heirs of the victims she was eligible for compensation for her grandmother's Berlin store seized by the Nazis more than 70 years ago.

When Cati Holland checked her email a few weeks ago, she was surprised to find a message saying she was eligible for compensation for her grandmother's Berlin store that was seized by the Nazis more than 70 years ago.

It wasn't spam or a phishing attempt or even a legitimate note from a German official working to track down victims and their heirs. Rather, it was from an Israel-based social media genealogy company that is using the Internet to help match property stolen by the Nazis to heirs of the victims.

"My grandmother told me so many stories about the store ? about the beautiful dresses and fancy hats they made, the wealthy customers who wore them," Holland, 75, told The Associated Press by phone from Hadera, Israel.

"But we always thought everything had been lost after my parents fled the Nazis. It never even occurred to us to claim any kind of restitution. I was completely surprised about that email."

Since the collapse of the Third Reich in 1945, Germany has paid around 70 billion euros ($92 billion) in compensation to the victims of the Holocaust. More than two million people have received lump sum payments or an ongoing monthly pension. The state of Israel has received around 1.7 billion euros ($2.2 billion), according to the German finance ministry.

Part of the compensation was earmarked for the Conference on Jewish Material Claims against Germany, a private New York-based organization that works to secure restitution for survivors and their heirs. Descendants can come forward to claim their family's assets until the end of 2014 if they find their original property on a recently released list by the Claims Conference, called the Late Applicants Fund.

Over the years, the search for the heirs has become more complicated because most of the Holocaust survivors have died. Descendants also don't always have detailed knowledge of their family's former assets.

But the rise of social media has offered new opportunities to track heirs and close the books on one of the darkest chapters of German history.

"We are only just seeing the huge impact that social media will have on Holocaust history," said Robert-Jan Smits, the director-general of the European Union's commission for research and design. "We are moving from dusty archives to digitized databases."

One of the driving forces behind the new push has been Gilad Japhet, CEO and founder of Israel-based MyHeritage, a social media website with about 70 million registered users worldwide that lets individuals build their own family trees online.

MyHeritage CEO, Gilad Japhet poses for a portrait at the company offices In the israeli town of Or Yehuda, Wednesday, July 24, 2013. The rise of socia...

MyHeritage CEO, Gilad Japhet poses for a portrait at the company offices In the israeli town of Or Yehuda.

A few months back, Japhet read a report about the Claims Conference's list of over 40,000 buildings, stores and factories that could not be matched with their original owners. Japhet matched some names on the list to the millions of names that users had posted on MyHeritage's family trees online.

"I thought my chances of finding any of the names on the website of MyHeritage were not looking good since experts have been searching for them for decades. But I still wanted to give it a chance," Japhet said. "I chose some very rare names from the list and to my surprise the second name I put in was already a match."

Japhet put together a team of five employees and had them write a computer program that automatically matches the names on the Claims Conference's list with those on the virtual family trees. So far, they have been able to match about 150 names on the list with names on the family trees. They expect to continue working on this project for several more months.

In the case of Cati Holland, MyHeritage initially contacted her son-in-law Eran Karoly. He had posted a family tree which included Recha Cohn, Holland's grandmother and the owner of the Berlin store, which was located on the fashionable Kurfuerstendamm boulevard in the western part of the city. Holland's grandparents escaped to South America shortly after the Nazis took over in the early 1930s and ended up in Israel many years later.

Holland filed an application for restitution to the Claims Conference and is now waiting for a response. The level of compensation depends on various factors, such as the value of the property and how many people will apply until 2014.

"I filled out the forms and sent in birth certificates and several photos," Holland said.

The Claims Conference itself says it has "received hundreds of applications" for the Late Applicants Fund but can't say for sure how many of them were due to MyHeritage.

Applicants who qualify for restitution will have to wait until the program's deadline on December 31, 2014, the Claims Conference's chairman Reuven Merhav wrote in an email.

As for Japhet and his team, they have made clear to the claimants that they don't want any money in return for their efforts.

"In my emails to the users, I always write that we don't want any money for doing this, nor part of any restitution they will get," said Japhet. "We do this as a mitzvah ? which in Judaism is a good deed."

Michigan declares "Henry Ford Day"

July 30th, 2013 will mark the 150th anniversary of Henry Ford's birthday, which prompted the state of Michigan to declare it ?Henry Ford Day,? recognizing the man's vast accomplishments and innovations.

Both the Michigan House and Michigan Senate adopted resolutions earlier this year to acknowledge Henry Ford?s impact on the automotive industry and on society at large.

Celebrations will take place tomorrow, July 27th, at Henry and Clara Ford?s historic home, Henry Ford Estate/Fair Lane in Dearborn.
