Election could spell end of GOP resistance to immigration reform

Washington is bracing for a fight in 2013 over immigration reform, a battle that could improve upon -- or threaten to exacerbate -- Republicans? deficit among Latino voters on display this election.

?White House and Democratic leaders have begun signaling that they might pursue the type of comprehensive immigration reform deal that has eluded President Barack Obama during his first term in office.

Their renewed push coincides with a fresh round of soul-searching among Republicans after Hispanic and Latino voters, who made up 10 percent of the electorate, broke for Obama over GOP nominee Mitt Romney by a 44-point margin.

An immigration reform debate next year in Congress could offer Republicans an opportunity to improve upon their 2012 performance, or further push Latino voters into the ?firmly Democratic? category.

Wider battle
Undergirding this inflection point for Republicans is a broader battle for the soul of the Republican Party. It pits the GOP's conservative wing, which speaks vocally against immigration reform, against leaders who urge the party to adapt for the sake of future electability.

?Republicans should approach it as the party of Reagan and Bush -- the party that has historically been pro-immigration,? said Grover Norquist, the anti-tax activist who is also spearheading an effort to sway fellow Republicans toward embracing immigration reform.

?We?re up against a president who introduced nothing legislatively. The idea that Obama and Democrats are good on this is all optics and no reality,? he said.

The party is a far cry from the days of George W. Bush's presidency, when he urged Congress to pass an immigration reform bill that offered undocumented immigrants a pathway to citizenship.

Republican leaders like Arizona Sen. John McCain were vocal proponents of those sorts of reforms, but the party has drifted rightward since conservatives balked at Bush?s 2007 immigration push -- and it has bled Latino voters ever since.

?The best thing about Republicans losing is that it will likely force them to cut an immigration deal,? said former Bush aide Mark McKinnon.

McCain, one of the party?s centrist figures on immigration, cut an ad during his 2010 re-election campaign urging the government to ?build the danged fence? -- that is, a fence sealing the border between the United States and Mexico.

NBC's Tamron Hall breaks down the results of the NBC News national exit poll, which shows a gender gap that worked in President Obama's favor as well as a boost from the Latino community, from which he received more votes than four years ago.

Republican senators who had supported the DREAM Act -- a piece of legislation offering a pathway to citizenship for children brought to the U.S. illegally -- withdrew their support and voted against the proposal in the last lame-duck Congress, fearing the backlash of the Tea Party at its apex of power.

Republican Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer spearheaded one of the most far-reaching immigration laws in the country, which allowed law enforcement officials to ask anyone whom they suspected of illegally being in the United States for proof of their residence.

The party?s shift was even more vividly illustrated during the 2012 Republican presidential primary. In that race, Mitt Romney positioned himself to the right of his opponents, going so far as to characterize his policy as favoring ?self-deportation? by making life in the United States so difficult for undocumented immigrants that they would voluntarily choose to leave.

?Should I win a second term, a big reason I will win a second term is because the Republican nominee and the Republican Party have so alienated the fastest-growing demographic group in the country, the Latino community,? Obama told the editors of the Des Moines Register in October, adding that it would facilitate a ?deep interest? in the GOP to get immigration reform done.

Added David Axelrod, the senior adviser to the president?s campaign, two days after the election: ?I think the Republican Party has some soul-searching to do after this election, and all you have to do is look at the nature of our coalition.?

The political timing for Democrats is ripe, and they have sent every signal in the aftermath of the election that they intend to seize the moment.

Vice President Joe Biden told reporters on Wednesday that he was ?very optimistic? about the prospects for immigration reform because the election had served as a ?wake-up call? for his GOP colleagues.

Gearing up for vote
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said Wednesday as well that the Senate should expect to vote on immigration reform this year.

?The only thing we need to get immigration reform done is a few Republican votes,? he said at a post-election press conference. ?It?s high on my list, and we?re going to have a few votes on it.?

Democrats? biggest ally in gathering Republican support, might be the specter of further Republican marginalization among Latinos.

?As a 14-year elected Republican official, I have to say that I'm very concerned about the Republican Party -- not that I didn't see it coming,? Republican Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff said on a conference call Thursday to address immigration.

He called on his fellow Republicans to reject the ?extreme right,? and move forward with some kind of immigration reform.

Norquist said he believes Republicans in Congress can be swayed toward immigration reform -- and even seize the initiative on it -- within a year.

?We need our Paul Ryan on the subject,? he said, ?the person who understands this issue better than anyone else, and walk colleagues through, step-by-step.?

I Want To Make My Ex Jealous - Stop And Think First

The path to reclaiming a relationship after an often-catastrophic breakup is one that is lined with potential pitfalls and dangers that you may never see coming. It's not a straight line that can be accomplished in a few steps. It's one that takes time, effort and foresight. It's one that you're willing to give everything up to face. The first phase is admitting that you really cannot control what your ex does, says or thinks - as much as you'd like to believe otherwise. The second phase is as simple as recognizing what you still have control over - and that's yourself. Ideally, that control is going to give you the upper hand. Making that dream a reality, however, is often far more difficult - especially if you fall into the pattern of mistakes that limits a lot of other's chances, if not negating them entirely.

By going through a recent breakup, you're probably all-too-familiar with the feeling of jealousy. You feel it every time you look at your ex, and sometimes it feels as if it's going to swallow you whole. It's no surprise that jealousy is often put into play in the war to win an ex back. It's forceful and powerful and can easily accomplish a lot of otherwise difficult tasks. It's like holding onto a grenade once the pin has been pulled, however. If you don't toss it carefully, it may just catch you in the explosion. If it does, you're going to find yourself in a world of hurt more drastic than you ever imagined.

That's why using jealousy intentionally should only be attempted in the minutest circumstances - and only with extreme caution prior to putting it into play. If your mind is racing with possibilities, you're probably wondering about the end game. What about pretending to date someone else? Can that be a sufficient way to get your ex's attention and make them jealous enough to want to do something about it?

In order to answer those questions, try putting the shoe on the other foot, first. How would you feel if you started dating someone that you genuinely liked - and you found out after the fact that they were using you to get back at someone else? It doesn't feel good at all, does it? That's the position that you would potentially be putting someone else in, just to prove a point and force a reaction from your ex. It's dishonest, it's mean, and ultimately it's going to fail. When your ex finds out what you're up to, things are going to get bad fast. Not only will you not get the chance to try again, but you will have completely minimized any lingering feelings that they had for you in the process. Then you'll have to start over from the beginning with someone new because they're gone - and they're not coming back.

If you do decide to date after your breakup, it's advisable that you take a good hard look at your motivation before beginning down that road. If you're doing it only to get a reaction, don't. As much as it may stink to be alone, the alternative is worse. If, however, you want to do it in order to try and move on, the field is yours. You can learn a lot about yourself in the process.

Putting yourself out there is never a bad idea - especially after a breakup when you feel vulnerable and alone. Spending time with other people and even meeting new people can have a very positive affect on you overall, and once you start focusing on the positive aspects of life rather than the negative, you'd be surprised at how quickly even the most hopeless of situations can begin to turn around for you.

Before simply throwing yourself into the dating pool full throttle, consider your motivation. Don't dive in with both feet and expect things to go swimmingly right off the bat. Your motivation for dating has a lot to do with how it plays out in the long run - and you want to make sure that your intentions are pure and you're not simply setting someone else up to feel the pain that you went through. There's no way to accurately predict what the future is going to bring, and if you begin a relationship hoping for a specific result, you're only going to set yourself up to fall again. That can be damaging to your self-esteem and your potential. It's best to proceed slowly and make sure you know what you're getting into - before it's too late to turn back.

If you've tried other tactics to get your ex's attention back, jealousy can be a valuable tool at your disposal. It instantly prompts a reaction, no matter how long ago you broke up. It's nearly timeless and can crop up at a moment's notice - even when you least expect it.

Jealousy can be a definitive tie-breaker in the battle to win back your ex, but make sure it's not the first (or only) option on your list. See it as a last-ditch effort more than an initial go-to response. It should only be used sparingly and with extreme caution. Before using it as a last option, make sure you've tried the many other techniques out there that can help reconnect your broken relationship more positively. They have a high rate of success, and they can help you avoid the potential dangers that jealousy inevitably brings in its wake.

By now you have probably realised that making your ex jealous is a dangerous game to play. You have other more successful tactics at your disposal, so use them instead. Understanding the best contact with your ex possible is one way to achieve this. When you pull this off your ex will be the one that is chasing you instead.

Analysis: Obama inbox overflows with world crises

LONDON -- The bunting?s down, the confetti swept away. The U.S. elections are over and President Barack Obama, the winner of four more years in power, can now cast an eye beyond the water?s edge -- to those thorny international problems that were bad enough before the vote and have only festered since then.

On the top of Obama?s in-tray: Syria. The civil war there is relentless. Opposition sources say at least 38,000 people have been killed. Syrian leader Bashar Assad pledges he will live and die in Syria. Only a puppet, he says, would step down or flee his nation for exile.

Every effort by the United Nations to end the fighting has been stymied by Russia and China vetoes. It is no wonder that, hours after Obama?s re-election, British Prime Minister David Cameron said that the crisis in Syria would be one of the first topics they would discuss.

The whole world was watching as America chose its president, and the general sentiment appeared to be a sigh of relief. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

Collective pressure has not worked and, with the need to appeal to his liberal, Democratic base now removed in a second?term, Obama may harden his stance and agree to arm the Syrian rebels under certain conditions.

As one British official told Reuters on Thursday: "We want to put everything (back) on the table."

World leaders welcome Obama's 2nd term -- but many challenges wait on his doorstep

That could mean forming, along with Cameron and other allies, a Libya-style military response which, in turn, might include air strikes and a no-fly zone.

Cameron summed up the dire situation in remarks released in London on Thursday.

In an interview with a Russian television channel, Syrian President Bashar Assad vowed to live and die in Syria, amid the 19-month old uprising against him. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports.

"Look, let?s be frank. What we?ve done over the past 18 months hasn?t been enough," he said.

Still, enforcing a no-fly zone without a U.N. mandate would be fraught with problems. Expect to see Obama finding a way to arm some rebels if they get their house in order and unite around principles the United States can support.

Ticking time bomb?
Iran is next on Obama?s to-fix list. Can anyone forget Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu?s ticking bomb whiteboard presentation at the U.N. General Assembly? With the sweep of a red Sharpie, Netanyahu claimed that Iran will have enough enriched uranium to make a bomb by early 2013.

Victorious Obama 'more determined' in face of challenges

U.S. intelligence believes Iran will not have a weapon before 2014, and in his first term Obama has opted to use that time to allow tough sanctions to bite.

But Netanyahu argues that sanctions will not work, and that the Iranians can speed up the bomb-making process -- it is one of many points of discord between Obama and Netanyahu, raising U.S.-Israeli tensions.?

My colleague, Martin Fletcher, writes that many Israelis fear Obama -- again, with his re-election pressures gone -- may now try to negotiate a deal directly with Tehran that could leave Israel exposed.

Or Obama may stay the course in his second?term, continuing to apply pressure through sanctions, while neither flashing Israel a green or red light to strike Iran. But Obama?s reluctance to get involved militarily in Iran is unlikely to change.

In an attempt to convey what he sees as a threat to Israel's existence, Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu used a cartoon to illustrate how close he says Iran is to developing a nuclear weapon. In a speech at the United Nations General Assembly he asked the world to help stop them. NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.

'Sleeping bear'
It is difficult to mention Syria and Iran without turning to Russia. The "sleeping bear" which, led by the mercurial Vladimir Putin, seems to counter American diplomatic efforts at every turn.?

When asked what are the three top issues facing?U.S.-Russian relations,?Michael McFaul, the American ambassador in Moscow, ticks them off without missing a beat are: Syria, Iran and missile defense.

As anti-US policies multiply, should next president treat Russia as friend or foe?

The latter is a red line for Russia. The placing of a NATO anti-missile defense shield -- Washington says to stop missiles fired from Iran -- near Russia?s border with Europe. But there is some cause for hope that, in his final term in office, Obama will find the "space" to compromise.

In March, Obama was caught by a live microphone saying as much to then-Russian President Dmitri Medvedev (this later became a talking point for Republican candidate Mitt Romney, who said: "When the president of the United States is speaking with the leader of Russia, saying he can be more flexible after the election, that is an alarming and troubling development.")

But it remains difficult to know how concretely Obama can compromise.?A Republican-led House of Representatives will oppose any Obama administration attempt to offer classified information about the missile shield to placate the Russians.

There is talk of Obama putting on a charm offensive in his second?term. McFaul told Russian radio this week that Obama would like to visit Russia soon -- but so far, since the "resetting" of the button in U.S.-Russian relations, Obama has watched Putin crack down on pro-democracy protesters and attack symbols of American values, like shutting down USAID and Radio Liberty inside Russia.?

Instead, Obama could choose in a second?term to focus more on what are perhaps easier issues, like adoptions and visas.

"The next phase ... has to do with a hundred small things," McFaul told the Moscow Times. "And it?s hard to keep our governments focused on a hundred small things." But the big things may remain too big to handle.

Russia will be at the top of the foreign policy agenda for whoever is in the White House. Ordinary Russians give their view of the election to NBC News in Moscow.

China issues go beyond trade
There are -- of course -- many other issues in Obama?s inbox waiting for his attention: tensions with China, for instance, go beyond issues of trade.

On Thursday, as China marked its once-in-a-decade transition to new leadership, a U.S. government report said the emerging super-power is just two years away from deploying submarine-launched nuclear weapons, adding a sea leg to its nuclear arsenal of at least 240 nuclear bombs.

Suspicion of US rife as White House contenders batter China

The worry is that China is the only original nuclear weapons state that is expanding its nuclear force.?

But what to do about China is just one of many dilemmas for Obama.

He?also needs to decide how to stop the spread?of al-Qaida in the Middle East and Africa, whether to continue to use drones to strike terrorist targets, how to deal with the new governments emerging from the Arab Spring, and how he will approach the seemingly?intractable Israeli-Palestinian stalemate.

24 hours after President Barack Obama was re-elected to the White House, the world's other major power, China, began the very different process of choosing its new leader. It happens once every ten years, and lasts just a week. And in case there was any doubt, the ruling Communist Party began by pledging never to have Western democracy. NBC's Angus Walker reports.

And -- in Afghanistan -- Obama faces a decision as to whether to?end the war there in 2014, or, as some military commanders have hinted, part company with his anti-war political "base" and keep some 15-20,000 U.S. troops in country for years to come.

Cleary, Obama?s in-tray is full of challenges, and a four-year term is awfully short. But at least the distractions of his re-election are behind him. Obama can now look forward. ?As he likes to say, "there?s a lot of work to do."?
