HP couldn't help but harsh the mellow of cutting-edge workers when it revealed the ElitePad 900 wouldn't ship until January. Still, there's less chance of any setbacks now that we know the FCC has rubber stamped the Windows 8 tablet. The version passing through the agency is a 3G model for mobile road warriors and touts the 850MHz, 1,700MHz and 1,900MHz bands we'd expect to for HSPA on AT&T, T-Mobile and Canadian networks. Few other surprises exist; we're mostly happy to know that NFC exists alongside dual-band 802.11n WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0. No, the approval won't be much consolation to the suits and ties wanting a tablet of their own as of yesterday, but it should be a relief to IT managers planning a much more creative use of the company budget in 2013.

Anibal Sanchez's delivery was way inside and it bounced ? and Sandoval still swung and missed. Sandoval swung at a couple more pitches that were in the dirt before grounding out.

Buster Posey fouled out on a 3-0 pitch and Sanchez, who looks much better than he did in the second inning, worked a perfect third. Marco Scutaro began the inning by getting called out on strikes.

Here they go again. The Giants are taking advantage of every opportunity.

Hunter Pence drew a four-pitch walk from Sanchez to start the second inning. Pence stole second as Brandon Belt struck out and went to third on a wild pitch ? a high fastball that tailed way off target and glanced off catcher Alex Avila's mitt.

With the count full, Gregor Blanco drove an off-speed pitch off the base of the wall in cavernous right-center for an easy triple that put San Francisco ahead.

The Giants are 8-1 when scoring first this postseason.

With two outs, Brandon Crawford lined an RBI single that fell just in front of speedy center fielder Austin Jackson.

In that situation ? two outs, a runner on third and the No. 9 hitter at the plate ? Jackson needs to be playing shallow enough that hardly anything can drop in front of him. A ball that gets over his head equals the same amount of runs as a ball that falls in front of him.

Sanchez is suddenly all over the place and the crowd is awfully quiet at Comerica Park, which was rocking during the ALCS sweep of the Yankees.

Several Giants players are bundled up on the bench but pitcher Ryan Vogelsong didn't even have a jacket on.

Once again, Prince Fielder fails to come through for the Tigers.

With two runners on in the bottom of the first inning, the meaty slugger grounded into an inning-ending double play.

Giants first baseman Brandon Belt made a nice pick of a wide and low throw from shortstop Brandon Crawford, barely keeping his foot on the bag it appeared.

Fielder is 0 for 5 with runners on base in the World Series. He began the night hitting just .205 with a homer and three RBIs this postseason.

Game 3 is scoreless heading to the second inning. Both starters appear to be throwing pretty well.

Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera and Giants catcher Buster Posey are the winners of the 2012 Hank Aaron Award, given to the top offensive player in each league.

The award was created in 1999 and this is the first time that the two recipients are facing each other in the World Series.

Cabrera and Posey received their awards before Game 3 in a ceremony attended by Aaron and Commissioner Bud Selig.

In addition to that news conference, Selig and Hall of Fame slugger Frank Robinson, a Triple Crown winner in 1966, presented Cabrera with the Triple Crown Award.

Use an Elevator Pitch to Pitch a Meeting About Your Project, Not Your Idea

Elevator pitches are a great way to condense a complex idea into a small amount of time so you can get the idea in front of someone who matters. Author Seth Godin recommends you pitch for a meeting, not the idea itself.

Essentially, the idea is to use that brief amount of time when you're in front of the powers-that-be to get a meeting so you can really pitch your project in full. Godin explains:

The best elevator pitch doesn't pitch your project. It pitches the meeting about your project. The best elevator pitch is true, stunning, brief and it leaves the listener eager (no, desperate) to hear the rest of it. It's not a practiced, polished turd of prose that pleases everyone on the board and your marketing team, it's a little fractal of the entire story, something real.

Of course, the elevator pitch isn't exclusive to elevators. It's useful when you need to pitch an idea?any idea?to anyone you want to work with. Godin's suggestion is that when you compress that idea into a two minute overview, the idea only loses a bit in the process. It also makes it a lot easier for someone to say "no." When you pitch the meeting, your ensuring you get the idea in front of people who matter, and it becomes a real conversation as opposed to an announcement.

Analysts see recovery sprouting at "FarmVille" creator Zynga

(Reuters) - Zynga Inc's quarterly revenue beat and its higher full-year earnings forecast show the embattled "FarmVille" creator may be on the path to recovery, analysts said, with at least one brokerage upgrading the company's stock.

Shares of the company rose 18 percent to $2.50 in early trade on Thursday on the Nasdaq. Since going public at $10 per share last December, Zynga has lost over three-quarters of its market value as the company struggled with delays in launching new titles as older ones fell out of favor.

Zynga raised the lower end of its 2012 earnings forecast on Wednesday and also announced a new deal with British company bwin.party to offer online real-money gambling and a $200 million share buyback plan.

"The announcement of a buyback, while rare for a company that less than a year ago was considered a 'high-flying', fast-growing 'hot' IPO, nonetheless signals that the board is confident in the company's future," Needham & Co analyst Sean McGowan wrote in a note.

He raised his rating on the stock to "buy" from "hold".

"While not bullish on the likely success of Zynga's new titles, since management recognizes that its older social games on Facebook are falling, it will spend accordingly and pivot more quickly to mobile," McGowan said.

Zynga laid off 5 percent of its full-time workforce and shut its Boston office on Tuesday as part of a sweeping cost-cutting campaign that may eventually result in the company closing its Japanese and British studios as well.

While it is healthy to evaluate cost-cutting initiatives, any material reduction in Zynga's creative talent could also lead to an erosion in innovative new game development, analysts at Piper Jaffray said in a note.

A new share buyback and real-money gaming partnership with Bwin.party will help, but ultimately Zynga needs to demonstrate it can produce hit titles on multiple platforms - mobile, social and browser, Robert W. Baird & Co said in a note.

As sales from one-time cash cows, "FarmVille" and "CityVille," are fading fast, Zynga is now investing more heavily in "mid-core" games, which require more development resources but are more immersive.

"We expect the strength of its development capabilities as well as its distribution to eventually drive better performance; we believe caution is warranted until we see signs of improved execution," BMO Capital Markets analyst Edward Williams said.

Indiabulls Real Estate To Launch Several Projects Outside Mumbai ...

?Indiabulls Real Estate Ltd?is set to launch as many as seven projects outside Mumbai in the remaining part of 2012-13, a move that could help the company hedge against the over-exposure to its core market.

The firm will launch primarily residential as well as office projects in Sonepat, Gurgaon, Indore and Chennai, according to a company presentation released post its quarterly results announcement late Tuesday.

Having said that, Indiabulls still has a high-value portfolio of projects in and around Mumbai, including a newly launched township in Savroli on the Mumbai-Pune expressway. Mumbai and its neighbourhood constitute more than half of Indiabulls? portfolio in terms of project value. ?The strategy is to focus on metro markets such as Mumbai and Greater Mumbai, NCR (National Capital Region that includes Delhi) and Chennai,? said?Saurabh Mittal, co-founder and vice-chairman, Indiabulls Real Estate.

While most of the firm?s Mumbai projects are in the luxury category, it has no specific pricing for its projects outside the region. ?We are looking to do projects in both premium and mid-market categories to cater to both kinds of buyers, depending on the location,? said Mittal. The projects are subject to regulatory approvals.

Since April, the Mumbai-based developer has launched two projects?a super-luxury residential project, Blu, in south Mumbai, and IB Golf City in Savroli, a premium residential township with a golf course.

Indiabulls relaunched Blu earlier this year, and it is now being sold at a base price of around?Rs.45,000 per sq. ft. The project is coming up on mill land that the firm bought in 2010 for about?Rs.2,000 crore. Indiabulls plans to re-launch the first of its Sky projects in Lower Parel, Mumbai, as well by the end of 2012 with new specifications.

According to the presentation, the company had a total saleable area under construction of 19.44 million sq. ft as of 30 September. Of this, 10.35 million sq. ft has been sold for?Rs.6,583 crore and the remaining space is expected to sell at?Rs.13,074 crore as per the current market rates.

Indiabulls Real Estate has done nearly?Rs.1,200 crore of pre-sales in its projects across India, of whichRs.900 crore was from projects in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

The company had a land bank of around 3,589 acres and added another 212.09 acres in the September quarter. ?Most of it (the land) is for future development with a three-five years horizon,? said a person familiar with the development.

Macquarie Research, in a 4 October India property report, said Indiabulls Real Estate?s over-exposure to high-end residential property in Mumbai was a risk because of high speculative and investor interest.

?If Indiabulls? project portfolio outside MMR takes off well, it would be a balancing factor because the dependence on the Mumbai property market would cease and it would also boost its sales numbers,? said an analyst with a domestic brokerage, who didn?t want to be named.

For the September quarter, Indiabulls posted a net profit of?Rs.32.24 crore, down 17.43% from a year ago and down 14.59% from the preceding June quarter. Total income from operations rose marginally by 0.7% year-on-year to?Rs.342.30 crore, and by 59.45% sequentially.

In August, Canada-based?Veritas Investment Research Corp.?targeted Indiabulls Real Estate andIndiabulls Power Ltd?in a report saying the purpose of the former firm seemed to be to bilk institutional and retail investors for the benefit of select insiders. Indiabulls retaliated by initiating legal proceedings.

Deer-car accidents are on the rise | Auto Insurance News

Deer and cars continue to be on a costly collision course.

The number of deer-related collisions in the U.S. rose 7.7 percent between July 2011 and June 2012, according to an analysis by auto insurance company State Farm. This jump follows a three-year span when such crashes fell by 2.2 percent.

State Farm estimates 1.23 million collisions caused by deer occurred in the U.S. between July 1, 2011, and June 30, 2012.

Claims on the rise

Meanwhile, State Farm says the number of deer-related auto insurance claims it has paid over the past four years has climbed by 7.9 percent, while other similar types of claims have fallen by 8.5 percent. State Farm says the average cost of property damage from deer-car crashes during the final half of 2011 and the first half of 2012 was $3,305, up 4.4 percent from same period a year earlier.

?We have known for quite a while that the frequency of auto insurance claims has been declining,? Chris Mullen, director of technology research at State Farm, says in a company news release. ?But whatever is causing that trend is obviously not impacting deer-related crashes.?

It?s important to realize that, despite its name, collision coverage under your auto insurance policy does not pay for damage caused by a deer-car collision. Rather, your policy?s comprehensive coverage pays for such damage. The deductible for comprehensive coverage typically is $500.

Ted Nickel, insurance commissioner in Wisconsin, says: ?Without the proper auto coverage in place, you?ll be faced with a large repair bill or, worse, a totaled vehicle with no coverage.?

Where the deer are

So, where are you most likely to hit a deer when you?re behind the wheel? For the sixth consecutive year, that distinction goes to West Virginia. In that state, the odds of a motorist hitting a deer over the next 12 months are 1 in 40, up from 1 in 48 in 2011. In the U.S., the odds are 1 in 171.

In 2010, deer-car collisions led to more than $52 million in auto insurance claims for personal vehicles in West Virginia, according to the state insurance commissioner?s office.

According to State Farm, here are the 10 states where you?re most likely to run into a deer with your car:

1. West Virginia (odds of 1 in 40).
2. South Dakota (1 in 68).
3. Iowa (1 in 71.9).
4. Michigan (1 in 72.4).
5. Pennsylvania (1 in 76).
6. Montana (1 in 77.7).
7. Wisconsin (1 in 78.7).
8. Minnesota (1 in 79.9).
9. Arkansas (1 in 102.5).
10. Virginia (1 in 103.2).

State Farm?s data shows November is busiest month for deer-car encounters. More than 18 percent of such collisions take place during that month. November is followed by October and December.

Avoiding a deer collision

The Insurance Information Institute and the Wisconsin Office of the Commissioner of Insurance offer this advice on how to stay out of harm?s way by staying out of a deer?s way:

? Remember that deer generally travel in herds. If you see one deer, changes are that other deer are lurking nearby.
? Keep in mind that deer are most active between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m.
? Use high-beam headlights as much as possible at night to illuminate areas where deer may enter a roadway.
? If you see a deer near the side of the road, slow down and blow your horn. You also may want to consider flashing your headlights to scare away the deer.
? If you spot a deer in front of you, brake firmly, don?t swerve, stay in your lane and bring your vehicle to a controlled stop. It?s better to hit a deer than to swerve and lose control of your car, and risk rolling over or hitting a tree or an oncoming car.
? If you hit a deer, don?t leave your car. The injured deer could harm you. Try to pull your car off the road and call the police.

They were shot at by two men in a van, and managed to take one down. When they pulled his mask off, the guy was black. That would seem to tie Pope into the shooting, but it could be subterfuge?

Much more clear was that Gemma displayed terrible judgment when she agreed to take Jax's kids for the weekend. She'd just been getting high and drinking with Unser, so she was in no shape to drive. Nevertheless, she headed off alone and almost drove into a tractor trailer. Instead, she veered off the road and crashed into the trees. As the episode ended, the baby could be heard crying, neither Abel or Gemma were moving, and somebody was bleeding.

IKEA Will Grow More Wood Than It Uses by 2020, Touts Clean Energy, Efficiency Commitments

IKEA has unveiled a new sustainability strategy, outlining the mega-retailers' green plans through 2020.

Entitled "People & Planet Positive", the plan has three main areas supporting the notion, in the words of IKEA's Chief Sustainability Officer, "that sustainability should not be a luxury good; it should be affordable for everyone."

In terms of energy usage, IKEA plans on investing $1.95 billion in renewable energy by 2015?a figure including investments dating back to 2009?and by 2020 will produce as much renewable energy as it consumes. Already, solar panels installed on its buildings, and the wind farms it owns across six European nations, account for 27% of all the electricity it consumes. To date the company is slightly under halfway to its 2015 commitment on investment.

The plan also aims to improve energy efficient of of IKEA operations by at least 20% by 2020.

In terms of wood usage, IKEA has pledged to grow as least as much wood as it uses by 2020. By 2017, the amount of certified sustainable wood it uses will increase four-fold from the amount purchased today, meeting half of all its wood usage for the year.

Announced earlier this month, IKEA also plans to increase the energy efficiency of the products it sells by 2016, convert all lighting products it sells to use LED bulbs and selling induction cooktops.

Zuckerberg: 'Mobile is the most misunderstood aspect of Facebook'

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg continued to press his mobile agenda during the social network's second conference call with analysts and investors on Tuesday.

Zuckerberg revealed his mobile interests rather earnestly during TechCrunch Disrupt in San Francisco last month, lambasting HTML5 in favor of native apps for smartphones and tablets.

At the time, Zuckerberg remarked that more users on mobile means that Facebook can make a lot more money through mobile over desktop.

The mobile rhetoric also had the benefit of deflecting some of the strong criticisms from analysts following the social network's poor public debut on the Nasdaq this summer.

Nevertheless, Zuckerberg reiterated the role that mobile could play for the company's overall revenue, asserting that "mobile is the most misunderstood aspect of Facebook."

Zuckerberg continued:

Most people underestimate how fundamentally good the trend towards mobile can be for Facebook. This is because there are three trends that are kind of compounded together.

First, mobile would give us the opportunity to reach way more people than desktop. Second, people on mobile use Facebook more often. And third, long-term I think we're going to monetize better per amount of time spent on mobile than desktop.

All of these combined together make mobile in much larger opportunity for us then I think most people realize.

To back this up, Facebook executives added the following numbers throughout the call:

• There are more than 1 billion people worldwide on Facebook, including 600 million on mobile.
• Zuckerberg said that Facebook is "the most widely downloaded app on basically every smartphone platform,? so we are well-positioned to reach the growing smartphone population."
• Someone who uses mobile has a 70 percent likelihood of using Facebook on a given day compared to a 40 percent rate on a desktop.
• Q3 news feed ad revenue averaged more than $4 million a day, with about three-quarters of that coming from the mobile feed.

Zuckerberg posited that one of the keys to understanding how to make sense of mobile going forward -- especially from an advertising standpoint -- is to compare mobile more to TV. He described that means high-quality ads that are baked into the mobile experience.

Exercise the body to keep the brain healthy, study suggests

People who exercise later in life may better protect their brain from age-related changes than those who do not, a study suggests.

Researchers found that people over 70 who took regular exercise showed less brain shrinkage over a three-year period than those who did little exercise.

Psychologists and Neuroimaging experts, based at the University of Edinburgh, did not find there to be any benefit to brain health for older people from participation in social or mentally stimulating activities.

Greater brain shrinkage is linked to problems with memory and thinking and the researchers say their findings suggest that exercise is potentially one important pathway to maintaining a healthy brain both in terms of size and reducing damage.

The researchers also examined the brain's white matter ? the wiring that transmits messages round the brain. They found that people over 70 who were more physically active had fewer 'damaged' areas ? visible as abnormal areas on scanning ? in the white matter than those who did little exercise.

Additionally, the researchers from the University of Edinburgh found that the over-70s taking regular exercise had more grey matter ? the parts of the brain with nerve cell bodies.

The Edinburgh team used MRI scans to measure the volume of brain tissue and the volume and health of the brain's white matter in almost 700 people.

They studied levels of physical activity which ranged from moving only for necessary housework to more strenuous forms of exercise such as keep-fit or taking part in competitive sports.

Scientists also recorded whether or not the participants ? all aged over 70 ? took part in mentally stimulating activities such reading and participating in social groups.

Dr Alan Gow of the University of Edinburgh's Centre for Cognitive Ageing and Cognitive Epidemiology who led the research, said: "Our results suggest that to maintain brain health, physical activity may be more beneficial than choosing more sedentary activities. We are excited by the next stages of this research as we seek to understand more about what might underlie the effect, but in the meantime, increasing physical activity ? even a short walk each day ? can only be encouraged."

Professor James Goodwin, Head of Research at Age UK who fund the Disconnected Mind research project, said: "This research is exciting as it provides vital clues as to what impacts the way our brain ages and how we could tackle mental decline. If we can establish definitively that exercise provides protection against mental decline, it could open the door to exercise programmes tailored to the needs of people as they age.

"We already know that exercise is important in reducing our risk of some illnesses that come with ageing, such as cardiovascular disease and cancer. This research reemphasises that it really is never too late to benefit from exercise, so whether it's a brisk walk to the shops, gardening or competing in a fun run it is crucial that, those of us who can, get active as we grow older."
